On the Road: Travelogue, Spring 2005

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Thom Jurek
Colorado's String Cheese Incident just keep the live documents coming. This triple disc of On the Road: Spring 2005 is an actual compilation of a spring tour rather than just one show as many of these releases have been. The tunes here were handpicked by Larry Fox, who has served as executive producer on many of these sets, compiled them, and done post-production work. There are some fine covers here, including a faux-bluegrass, Grateful Dead-style improvisatory read of B.B. King's biggest hit and signature tune "The Thrill Is Gone," written by Rick Darnell and Roy Hawkins. The band was augmented here by Ronnie and Rob McCoury, on mandolin and banjo respectively, and fiddle ...

The band was augmented here by Ronnie and Rob McCoury, on mandolin and banjo respectively, and fiddle wizard Jason Carter. The three solos they give here are what make the tune such a righteous jam. It should also be noted that Michael Travis' percussion work and Kyle Hollingsworth's Hammond B3 keep the thing in a rock-steady groove. The guest trio also performs on "Old Dangerfield." Another cover worth noting is STI's read of Jane's Addiction's "Been Caught Stealing" that actually features Perry Farrell on vocals! The second disc features one of the more forceful versions of "Rivertrance," performed on these documents so far, and it's followed by a slippery "River's Rising" that stomps it all home. The double threat of "Glory Chords" and "Black Clouds" are the centerpiece of disc three, followed by a fine pair of covers: Bob Dylan's "Tangled Up in Blue," (with guest Drew Emmit on mandolin) and the honky tonk nugget "Dim Lights, Thick Smoke (And Loud Loud Music)" written by Joe Maphis and Max Fidler. These performances are solid throughout and Fox left most of the hokey stuff off this set, which makes it a solid jam outing.
