On the Streets: The Lives of Adolescent Prostitutes

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 9-12 This book is successful in presenting an overview of the feelings and fears of many young prostitutes, but unfortunately it gives a rather glib presentation of background information. The format is a combination of profiles (actually composites based on personal interviews) of young prostitutes and short analyses of aspects of this terrifying problem. The profiles often read like poorly-written potboilers, but this does not alter the fact that the experiences related are frightening and depressing. The information sections deal with pimps and their tactics; home situations that can lead to adolescent prostitution (physical and sexual abuse; emotional abuse, abandonment, etc); young male prostitutes; a very brief historical overview of adolescent prostitution; and community responses to the problem. This book fails as an academic presentation; sources for statistics (of which there are very few) are not always cited. Students who need hard data on this topic would do better to use current periodical articles. Rosie Peasley, Sylvan Union School District, Modesto, Calif.
