Overview

“Vom Kriege” is a book on war and military strategy by Prussian general Carl von Clausewitz, written mostly after the Napoleonic wars, between 1816 and 1830, and published posthumously by his wife in 1832. It has been translated into English several times as “On War”. “On War” is actually an unfinished work; Clausewitz had set about revising his accumulated manuscripts in 1827, but did not live to finish the task. His wife eventually compiled his work, leaving out his later revisions, and finishing the final two chapters either herself or with assistance from an unknown government official.

Clausewitz integrates politics and social and economic issues as some of the most important factors in deciding the outcomes of a war. It is one of the most important treatises on strategy ever written, and is prescribed at various military academies to this day.

    Text on War

This is not an easy book to read nor understand. It takes several readings. A large investment in time will allow the reader to understand Clausewitz's system and the remarkable way that it stills aides in understanding the phenomenon of war. The text is adorned with many historical examples. Continuously emphasizing that war is 'a continuity of policy by other means. He has defined perfectly the theory of war, its tactical and strategic purposes. A must for an military or political leader.

    Good Strategy Book

On War is a brilliant book on warfare strategy. It is very complex, and only the most indugeous minds can fully comprehend this. And yet, it is so simple that its tactics can be employed in a water gun fight.

Didn't realize this was only the first four books...

I needed all eight books within On War- and paid for this thinking it had all of them. Unfortunately it only has the first four.

A guide for William Tecumseh Sherman

On War is essentially the guide followed by Sherman on his famous march to the sea. The concept of TOTAL WAR was outlined in this expansive text.
