WAS THE WHOLE TOWN IN ON THE MATCHMAKING SCHEME? What a sweet and clean second-chance romance story. Franzi Mueller comes home every year for Thanksgiving to Freedom Valley and to assist her family with a show for Veteran’s at the VA hospital. She lives in Houston and works as a fashion designer, her dream job. This year, things are a bit crazy and everyone seems to be involved in a matchmaking scheme between her and her high school sweetheart, Dietz. When they are together, sparks still happen. When a conference call with her job disrupts her dream, an offer for a new job closer to home, and romance in the air for her and Dietz, will she come back home? The plot is sweet, the characters charming, the match-making blatant and the dialog heartwarming. ON WITH THE SHOW is a contemporary romance novella set in Freedom Valley, Texas. This sweet love story has a nostalgic feel and the author captures the essence of a close knit small town. I loved the descriptiveness of expressions and emotions, which immediately pulls the reader in, establishing a rapport with the main characters. The dialogue in particular had a smooth, natural speech vibe. Heroine Franzi Mueller works in the intensely competitive fashion world, but is taking time off to return home for the Thanksgiving holiday. The demands of her job and unpleasant coworkers provide external conflict but also serve as a source of discontent in her life. As the story begins, Franzi appears to be entering a period of self-doubt regarding the choices she has made in life. Her return home exacerbates the heroine's awareness of what she has sacrificed for her career—the closeness of friends and family and the love of her high school sweetheart. While Franzi left town following high school, hero Dietz Reinhardt stayed behind to take over his family business. It's pretty clear right from the beginning that Franzi broke Dietz's heart when she left, which makes him cautious about trusting her. His brief marriage to another woman failed and it swiftly becomes clear that he is still carrying a torch for Franzi. He seems torn between wanting to be with the heroine and worrying that she'll love him and leave him again. Reluctant in love Franzi and Dietz don't stand much of a chance of remaining apart. The whole town seems to be in on a grand plot to bring them together. The antics of the townsfolk are definitely amusing and help to drive the story. One machination after another throws the pair together and their powerful attraction for each other does the rest. The cast of secondary characters is full of lively, interesting faces but I did feel overwhelmed at points. I wanted to see more of the hero and heroine together, less of meddling neighbors and relatives. ON WITH THE SHOW will appeal to readers looking for a sweet romance full of homey themes: being with friends and family, childhood sweethearts reunited, and a lovely touch of humor. The conclusion is bright with promise and will not disappoint.
