Great Insights Into The Romance Genre

This book gives you a lot of insight into what must go into a romance novel. But it also tells you what the reader is looking for and what you have to give them for your romance novel to ber a success. She was honest and straightforward, which I appreciated. Her discussion of point of view showed me how different romance is from other genres in that you have two points of view. You also have two story lines: the one about the pair falling in love and the story behind it. Great book. Useful information.

    High Overview to the Genre

If you’re looking for an overview of the genre this book will at least give you a good outlook on what falls into what categories in the broad expanse of a genre. This is useful if you are just starting out and need to find a niche to start to work with and want to work exclusively with romance. If you are looking for more in depth help, this really doesn’t give you anything that you don’t find in a general writing book. I picked this up trying to flesh out some of the romance in my writing that doesn’t fall completely in the Romance genre, and couldn’t find anything that I had not picked up in other general writing books that gave a brief overview on relationship in writing.

    Flawed formatting

It looked like good infomation in the sample pages, but just in those pages, there wwre two major interupt-and-repeat-what-was-just-said errors. Makes me concerned about the rest of the book.

Decent advice and definitions of romance types

However, the actual writing was pretty flat. It's also pretty clear that for all the changes to the romance format in the last twenty or thirty years, the gender stereotypes are still pretty much the same: the man is still the leader in the relationship, the woman is much more likely to be "feisty" than strong, and the characters are expected to be youngish, good looking, and either middle class or rich.
