A Legend Come To Life

Half a millennium ago Neil Elfward, a legendary human warrior, fought alongside his Elven friend Aarundel for the freedom of mankind against the tyranny of the sorcerous Reithrese empire. But Neal's victory began a genocidal war that cost him dearly.

Now the future he hoped for is unraveling. Count Berengar has invited the lovely Genevera, Aarundel's granddaughter, to join in a quest to bring stability to the land. Pressed to accomplish the impossible, Genevera suggests the unthinkableraising Neal from the dead. But what is true in legend is not always true in reality. A hero from yesteryear may be a hero still, but is Neal the hero they want?

Once a Hero is a rousing adventure of mystery and magic, in the best tradition of Robert Jordan and David Eddings, by one of the most exciting and imaginative new voices in fantasy fiction.

The entire right side of every page is cut off no matter what settings are used including publisher default I may as well have burned my money or flushed it down the toilet

Something is really wrong with how this book shows up in ebook format! Terribly, terribly wrong! I have read the paperback version and I know it's a great story. But the way the book is formatted makes it unreadable.

I had the same problem as many others, that the formatting did not work on my Nook tablet. I am glad to say that this has now been corrected, and the book is now readable. Now if they can just fix Talion: Revenant...

I cannot count how may times I have read this book! Michael Stackpole is THE Master of leading male characters. Neal is strong, brave, noble, and flawed. All of this is what makes Neal so very perfect. This is a story of fierce friendship, forbidden love and the chance to be remembered forever! It teaches us that history is sometimes much more kind than the truth. That the people who love us most will never forget the best parts of us. And that, even heroes are afraid but they press on in the face of that fear, that is what makes them great!

I read this book TWICE in two days. A fantastic read is putting it lightly. I have actually bought mumerous copies and gave them to my friends and family. I wanted them to experience this wonderful story. It has humor, action, romance, etc. The characters are so easy to get attached to. And the ending...

This book has it all. Love, homor, action... I was very pleased with it all. The story line constantly went from past to present, but it did so in a manner that didn't lose you. The characters were easy to get attached to and the story line itself was fantasic. This book is one of my favorites.

I am an avid reader. I love reading, mostly Sci-Fi and Fantasy. I have read more novels than I can count, and this is my favorite one. Ever. What else can I say?

As an english major, it is rare that I find a book truely worth recommending -- much less reading through more than once. This novel really impressed me. Stackpole has managed to write a modern day masterpiece full of intrigue, passion, violence ... and above all love. The characters are unforgettable, the imagery/scenery is beautifully described, and the story itself is wonderfully woven -- a classic for all ages. Enjoy!
