His love was wild...  his soul untamed...  his touch forbidden....

From acclaimed author Susan Krinard comes the second novel in a magnificent trilogy of a powerful clan whose sensual legacy is cloaked in secrecy-and a beautiful woman kidnapped by an outlaw whose forbidden embrace could reveal her true identity.... Once a Wolf

In the unspoiled expanses of the American West, Tomás Alejandro Randall was called El Lobo, the desperado and sworn enemy of powerful financier Cole MacLean.  Few humans knew his true identity: heir to a wolf bloodline that made him as much an exotic beast as a devastatingly attractive man.  It was Tomás's plan to lure Cole MacLean's elegant fiancée, Lady Rowena Forster, from her New York mansion to the wild frontier.  There he planned to seduce the golden-haired beauty as revenge for the destruction of his family at MacLean's hands. But once she was in his possession, El Lobo found himself unable to resist the call of his own untamed passion-a passion that would claim the beauty for his own.  As for Lady Rowena, she desperately hid her own wolf heritage behind an icy, controlled exterior. Yet the famous "Lady Ice" found her inhibitions melting and her true nature emerging in the presence of this handsome desperado.  Both knew the danger of their pairing, but their wild hearts would risk everything-even death-for a chance at everlasting love.

Editorial Reviews

Melinda Helfer
If there are not werewolves in the world as described by Ms. Krinard, there should be. Her marvelous creations have earned her a very special niche in romance annals and guarantee her first place in the hearts of lucky readers.

The professionals make it sound so stupid! Listen to mine

This was a beautiful romance! It didn't start that way though. Its characters are werewolves (A touch of mystery). The woman (Rowena) rejects her werewolf side and tries to hide it. She just wanted it to go away. While the man (Tomas) embraced his and used it to his advantage (for good, though). Tomas Randall and Cole MacLean had sought revenge and ruin for each other. Taking what they could from the other. MacLean was a rich man who was a werewolf (used his bad powers) and Randall who was an outlaw thief. One day Tomas hears that Cole has taken a woman to be his future bride and decides to steal that ultimate thing. The woman (Rowena). While Cole was away Randall dressed up as a gentleman and told Rowena that her brother was in trouble. She agreed to go with him and he gave her tickets. On the train Tomas sees Cole's little brother, Weylin and escapes out the window and runs ahead to the train stop (He is a werewolf so he can run fast). Rowena meets Weylin and he tells her she has been deceived and he tries to take her to safety at a fort. On the way to the fort Tomas and his men intercept them and hold them at gun point. He kidnaps Rowena and takes her to his secret hideout. On the way though they start to like each other but tell themselves otherwise. Rowena tells herself that Tomas is a lawbreaker, scoundrel that is an enemy while Tomas tells himself it's just business. They like each other even more when Tomas rescues a girl that was thought of us a witch because she could see into others hearts. Rowena takes charge of the girl and names her Hope. Every step of the way they like each other more and more but while they face struggles inside themselves a traitor is in the ranks. He hates seeing Tomas and Rowena together and takes her away back to her fiancée, surprisingly, against her will. Tomas goes after her and they travel to Las Vegas because Rowena thinks she can stop Cole from hurting Tomas by telling him she escaped and Tomas is dead. It turns out that that didn¿t work and so comes the final show down where either the last descendent of the Randall¿s or the MacLean¿s dies. IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS KEEP READING BUT IF YOU DON¿T SKIP THIS: Cole kills himself so Tomas lives and Weylin and him make friends. I won¿t give you the details but you HAVE to read when Tomas proposes to Rowena. Happy reading!

If you like Science Fantasy you'll love this!

This book is a 'must-read' if you love science fantasy. It may seem a little 'wordy' in places but I absolutely loved it. I'm anxiously waiting for a sequal.

Exciting mixing of werewolves into a western romance

Unable to heed her brother Braden¿s orders to marry a fellow werewolf for the good of the Cause (see TOUCH OF THE WOLF), Lady Rowena Forster fled England for America. By 1878, Rowena is tutoring young ladies in New York City and engaged to wealthy financier Cole MacLean. However, Cole¿s enemy Tomas ¿El Lobo¿ Randall has other plans for Rowena. While Cole is away on business, Tomas persuades Rowena to head West to save the life of her twin brother Quentin.

However, now that the outlaw El Lobo has hidden Cole¿s fiancee in the middle of New Mexico Territory, he finds himself mesmerized by her. Instead of an aloof society lady, she, like him, is a werewolf allowing her animalistic nature to surge through her heart. As Tomas and Rowena fall in love, Cole follows them because no one steals a possession of his, especially his family¿s long time enemy.

ONCE A WOLF, the second tale in Susan Krinard¿s historical werewolf romantic trilogy, is a wonderful supernatural story. The story line takes loup garou elements and successfully plants them inside a western romance. The lead couple is a warm blooded duo while the support cast provides insight into the era as well as enhancing the paranormal elements. Fans of werewolf romances or western romances will fully enjoy Ms. Krinard¿s blending of the two sub-genres into an exciting novel.
