Once Again

Barnes & Noble - Tracy E. Hopkins
Aside from his gravely pipes and genteel piano playing, John Legend's sophomore record has little in common with his Grammy-winning debut, Get Lifted. Surprisingly experimental, Once Again finds Legend dabbling in psychedelic rock "Show Me" and Burt Bacharach-reminiscent pop "Where Did My Baby Go". Although his ambition should be applauded, the best cuts find Legend's off-kilter vocals anchored by his sparse ivory tickling, as on the dramatic "Again," or by pitch-perfect background vocals and heartier rhythms as on the vintage soul slice "Another Again." Several Motown-styled tracks produced by the Black Eyed Peas' will.i.am -- "Each Day Gets Better," "Save Room," ...

Although his ambition should be applauded, the best cuts find Legend's off-kilter vocals anchored by his sparse ivory tickling, as on the dramatic "Again," or by pitch-perfect background vocals and heartier rhythms as on the vintage soul slice "Another Again." Several Motown-styled tracks produced by the Black Eyed Peas' will.i.am -- "Each Day Gets Better," "Save Room," and "Slow Dance" -- are also well suited to Legend's classic soul leanings. His freak flag, however, doesn't wave high enough to pull off the naughty boast of "P.D.A.": "I don't care about propriety / Let's break the rules / Forget society." After all, Legend's no bad boy. He's a throwback to clean-cut crooners like Smokey Robinson, and Once Again, that's what makes this engaging singer-songwriter a legend in the making.
Rolling Stone - Jonathan Ringen
1/2 [Once Again] blends lush, elegant band arrangements with stylish synth parts and cool samples.
Billboard - Clover Hope
[Legend] makes room for his adulterous guilty pleasures ("Again") alongside whistle-worthy numbers ("Maxine") and '70s-style grooves ("Slow Dance") that ooze sophisticated charm.
Los Angeles Times - Ann Powers
1/2 Legend pinpoints where soul's vulnerability meets hip-hop's self-sustaining bragadoccio -- where the lover and the fighter become one complex character. Exploring that juncture with elegance and passion on "Once Again," he moves through "neo-retro" soul's clichés to flesh out his own vision of love, loss and happiness.
San Francisco Chronicle - Lee Hildebrand
The Ohio-born crooner's simple, often lilting love songs seep so much sincerity, and his low-tenor tones radiate such warmth that he's almost certain to capture the broader pop audience he seems to be targeting.

[Legend] makes room for his adulterous guilty pleasures ("Again") alongside whistle-worthy numbers ("Maxine") and '70s-style grooves ("Slow Dance") that ooze sophisticated charm.

    I Also Recommend:

Glad this CD is still available

When I first heard Save Room by John Legend about 4 years ago, and it had that sampling of Stormy by Classics IV ("oh, Stormy, bring back that sunny day"), I had to buy the CD just for that particular song. I went searching for the CD, not knowing what the CD cover looked like and who John Legend was. It has been a good while since I bought any CDs for pure listening enjoyment.

Finally, after these many years, I purchased this CD last month as a gift to myself for Christmas. Once Again is definitely beautiful music to my ears. John Legend's singing style is soooo soothing and it has that good warm feeling to cuddle next to that special someone you love. My fav songs on this CD are Save Room, Each Day Gets Better, PDA (We Just Don't Care) and Slow Dance.

This is not the only CD I gave to myself as a gift; I also purchased R Kelly Love Letter, El DeBarge Second Chance and Sade Soldier of Love CD's.

    'Once again' a must have

John Legend's "Get Lifted" was an addictive album and very enjoyable for any soul listener. His latest "Once Again" is really the stuff of R&B old school mixed. Piano touched singles as "Again" "P.D.A (We just don't care)" & "Where did my baby go?" sets the it off along with "Heaven" and "Save Room". John Legend is a geat edition to the cd player.

Real R&B is not a fad.

Mr. Legend out does his first release. Comparing "Get Lifted" to "Once Again" would be like comparing Stevie Wonder to R. Kelly.
