From "A Tree Called Grouch" One of the original and magical stories in "Once..."

Once upon a time, as all good fairy tales begin... and not so very long ago, there was a forest.

It was a very big forest, full of the most wonderful things you would expect to find. There were flowers and birds, and trees of every description: fat and tall ones, thin and small ones.

It was a very happy place.

All over the forest there was happiness, everywhere that is, except in its center. In the very middle of the forest stood a tree that was larger than any other tree you could imagine. It was the oldest and wisest tree in the forest. His name was Grouch.

The other trees gave him this name because all day long Grouch would sit and gripe and groan about everything and anything that happened in his part of the forest. Soon, all the flowers that grew around Grouch became so unhappy that they withered away and died.

After not very long at all, Grouch stood completely alone. Not a single plant or tree grew anywhere near to him. The birds and animals of the forest would walk or fly right around where Grouch stood so that they would not have to hear him complain. Eventually, no one ever saw or spoke to Grouch.

It was a bright spring morning when Sparce the Sparrow decided to leave his mother's nest and find a home of his own. His brothers and sisters had left the nest a few days earlier. Indeed, all the other young animals and birds in the forest had already found themselves new homes.

When Sparce came to search out a new home for himself, he began to realize that finding a new home would not be easy. Sparce flew all day through the forest, and everywhere he rested he was told, "Clear off!" or, "Get out of my tree!" Soon Sparce was very tired.

As he was just about to give up all hope of finding a home for himself, Sparce suddenly flew into an open space in the forest. In the center of this space stood a tree, bigger than he had ever seen before. But the most important thing about this tree, it was vacant.

No one was staying in this tree, so Sparce decided it would be the most perfect place for him to build a nest. Unknown to Sparce, this tree happened to be.... Grouch.

A great book to read to your children

I bought 'Once' to read to my two young children. The wonderful thing about this book is that each story has a different moral, and each of them is a valuable, positive lesson for all children to learn. The drawings are really, really cute and my children fell in love with each and every character. All in all just an absolutely delighful book that I highly recommend to any parent or grandparent.

A collection of stories for any age.

Fantastic, original, and wonderful. My three year old and five year old love the stories as much as my wife and I do. Overcoming adversity, tolerance of the differences in others, and unconditional love...lessons that need reinforcing always.

    Definatley a 'must have'

This is a great book. The stories are whimsical, amusing, but most of all, they are ideal for children to fall asleep too or sit and listen too on a lazy afternoon. The illustrations are really cute and obviously drawn with the stories in mind. I bought this book for my grandchildren, but on reading it first, went straight out and bought a second copy just for me. I was delighted. Grouch and Sparce will become a classic in their own right. I cried near the end with sorrow for little Sparce, and then cried with joy at the end at the lovely moral the story portrayed...what a clever author.
