Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Reading is taken to a new level in this interactive book of original poetry. In each poem, the reader must choose the correct word out of two choices in order to complete the line. But this book is not limited to kids already learning to read, for each word choice is illustrated. The reader can point out pictures of the rhyming words to the nonreader. Full-page color drawings throughout aid the imagination in these silly, fantastic stories, some of which are parodies of classic nursery rhymes. A favorite is an old woman who lived in a "zoo," and eventually moved her children into a shoe. All of these little poems are endearing and entertaining for children and adults alike. With lyrical rhythm and funny verses, this book makes for a breezy read—children won't even realize that it is educational as well as fun. This title is part of the "Rhyme Time Learning" series. 2004, Garth Stevens Publishing, Ages 3 to 6.

K-Gr 3-This entertaining read-aloud actively involves children by offering plenty of opportunity for prediction through picture clues and rhyming patterns. Each page contains a verse with supporting illustrations. Capitalized, colored font provides readers with two word choices-the correct one, of course, is the word that fits the rhyming pattern. For example, "Oh, you can try, but what's the use?/You cannot tame a big, old/MOUSE/MOOSE./He smacks, he spits, he spills his juice." The brightly colored cartoons are amusing (especially the poor snake with the stomachache) and work well with the text. These lengthy selections work best as read-alouds and the book will be a satisfactory addition for most collections.-Robyn Walker, Elgin Court Public School, St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
