Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ellen Welty
This title in the "Writer's Toolbox" series, written for fairly young writers, is typical of the other books in the series. The book focuses on one example of a fairy tale, in this case Little Red Riding Hood, and breaks it down into its various elements which are labeled tools. This allows young writers (and readers) to effectively analyze their own efforts or, as a reader, other fairy tales. The version of Little Red Writing Hood used in this book is not credited, an oversight that young writers do not want to make, and the illustrations are of inconsistent quality. Nevertheless, the advice given is fairly standard with that given in writing texts and it is presented at a level that children can understand and use. Nice additional features include a review of the tools, a page of exercises to get started writing, a page of tips, a glossary, a bibliography, and list of websites. Reviewer: Ellen Welty
