Overview

As we started down the sidewalk, I knew something was wrong. Trees were missing. A house I had walked by time and time again was gone. Now there were only splintered boards, broken glass, shreds of curtain, and twisted doors. Mama and I passed another house I knew. It was caved in too. People were picking their way through the pile of rubble. They were clearing a space on the grass. They'd laid some big things in the cleared part of the yard. The things were long and covered with sheets. I stopped. Bodies. Bodies lay in the yard. I could make out the legs now. And heads. Noses. Foreheads. Chins.
