Onda Sonora: Red Hot & Lisbon

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Mark Schwartz
The 11th chapter in the ongoing Red Hot series of AIDS awareness projects is as state-of-the-art as world music gets. With a cast of characters spanning the worlds of international music and DJ culture, and an unlikely focus on Lusophone sounds from Portugal, Africa, and Brazil, ONDA SONORA delivers its surprises in subtle, satisfying ways. Like the title, literally "sound wave," which plays not only on the maritime aspect of Portugal's colonial history, but on the diffuse, electronic influences that settle comfortably between the fierce rhythms of Angola, Brazil, and Guinea, and the contemplative strains of Lisbon's fado. The 23 tracks set up exciting artistic collaborations in the Red Hot mold -- Angola's Bonga joins Brazilians Marisa Monte and Carlinhos Brown on the early showstopper "Mulemba Xangola"; David Byrne kindles sparks with Caetano Veloso; jungle DJ Soul Slinger remixes a rootsy Cape Verdean track by Simentera, and there's much more -- even k.d. lang singing in Portuguese. You might find the notion of paying homage to Portugal's colonial legacy -- as bloody, crude, and exploitive as any empire's in history -- questionable. But ONDA SONORA doesn't shy away from the issue, offering instead a compilation of music that broods and ruminates (the achingly gorgeous morna "Nha Vida" by Cape Verdean singer Lura) as often as it celebrates ("Hailwa Yange Oike Mbela," the after-hours house mix by Underground Sound of Lisbon featuring Angola's Filipe Mukenga). Edgy tracks by international provocateurs Arto Lindsay, Arnaldo Antunes, Vinicius Cantuária, and others make this wave one you gotta catch.
All Music Guide - Heather Phares
The 12th album in the Red Hot Organization's compilation series, Onda Sonora: Red Hot & Lisbon is a musical travelogue of Portugal, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Goa, and Brazil. The album brings some of the finest musicians from those countries together with acts from the U.S. and the U.K., and features David Byrne and Caetano Veloso's collaboration "Dreamworld: Marco de Canaveses," k.d. lang's "Fado Hilario," and Antonio Chaino's "Variacoes Em Mi Menor," along with tracks by Madredeus, Arto Lindsay, and Durutti Column. As with the other albums in the Red Hot series, Onda Sonora: Red Hot & Lisbon's proceeds go toward the Red Hot Organization's worldwide AIDS education and prevention efforts.
