If you had to boil your book’s message down to one sentence, what would it be? Good nutrition and great taste don’t have to sit at opposite ends of the table! What are you working on now? I’m working on a second book for people undergoing cancer treatment that will cross reference specific symptoms and cancer types with foods that will bolster the effectiveness and outcome of their treatment. Do you eat your vegetables? I love my veggies. Especially the stud vegetable, broccoli! I even love my dark leafy greens, sautéed in a bath of olive oil and garlic. Tell me something that other people might not know about you. I’m a certified food fondler. Have any good pet stories? Bella is my 4 ½ year old Portuguese Water Dog. She is the ultimate kitchen dog with an amazing nose. Currently, she has a job—every Monday, I bring her to a clinic in San Anselmo where she is a part of the second Canine Cancer Scent Study in the country. A dog’s olfactory senses are 800% more sensitive than humans. A dog can smell cancerous molecules through the breath, even before a scan can diagnose the presence of cancer in the body. Dogs are redefining the “Pet Scan.” She works for treats. Her nose is so sensitive, that if I am making one of my regular dishes, and I forget to add the carrots, she will take her paw and scratch my leg to remind me.

"One Bite at a Time" was intended for people with cancer who need profound nourishment but who rarely have an appetite. The recipes smell good while cooking and are mouth-watering while eating. As Susan Lord writes on the cover: "Rebecca Katz is a genius at making nutritious food delicious..." I've given it as a gift to 2 cancer survivors. But this cookbook really is for anybody and everybody. I am not a cancer survivor, but I have come to crave the dishes Ms. Katz has created. For starters, try the "Magic Mineral Broth". It is so simple to make and easy to store; it fills the house with divine aromas and tastes great. You can also use it as a base instead of water for making rice, etc. My favorites are the soups, like "Carrot-Ginger Soup with Cashew Cream" and "Emerald City Soup". They don't take any time to make and they're unbelievably delicious. But there are also great recipes for chicken, salmon, vegetable and rice dishes as well as for desserts. Remember - these ingredients are good for you, and loaded with nutrients to help you heal, or keep you healthy. I highly, unreservedly recommend this cookbook as a staple in everyone's kitchen.

I bought this book for my parents. My mother had seen it recommended in a cancer magazine. Since I have the Barnes and Nobles membership, I knew I could get it very quickly. My dad was recently diagnosed with cancer and my mom is the care taker, cook, dietician, etc. She says this book has many excellent, easy recipes. My dad's appetite and taste changes moment to moment since he has been on the chemo. This book has been a very tool for my mom.
