In 1990, the joint efforts of the World Cup and the Three Tenors provided opera singing with its biggest ever foray into the pop charts. Unassuming tenor Paul Potts, originally from Bristol, took opera back to the very top of the charts with the album One Chance 17 years later, and he too had a helping hand from the enormously popular television talent show Britain's Got Talent. There is no denying that Paul Potts has indeed got talent, but is he a better singer than any of the Three Tenors? Certainly not. All Music Guide - Sharon Mawer
Still, a TV talent show captures the public almost as much as the World Cup, and Potts rides this wave extremely well. He began his trip into TV stardom singing that staple of operatic performance "Nessun Dorma," and this aria opens the album too. The problem is that by 2007 the song was so famous that Potts openly invites comparisons with a multitude of operatic tenors who have sung it before. Not that this is any bad thing; it's a difficult song to sing well and Potts does sing nicely in tune, every note well rehearsed, but there is a lack of real feeling and emotion that betrays his rapid rise. In fact, One Chance is not really an opera album at all, and the millions of people who bought it thinking they were buying into a slice of high culture got an album filled with tracks like "Time to Say Goodbye" Con Te Partirò, a hit single from Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli; "Everybody Hurts" Ognuno Soffre, originally by R.E.M.; and versions of "My Way," "Cavatina" the theme from The Deer Hunter, and Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Music of the Night" from Phantom of the Opera. The track "Caruso" had been recorded by almost everyone in this genre from Russell Watson to Il Divo, and in a similar way that Vittorio Grigolo took a modern pop song, Keane's "Bedshaped," and made it sound like an operatic aria, so Potts translates Westlife's "You Raise Me Up" into Italian and produces a sound far removed from the Westlife hit. One Chance was the sort of album that had the stamp of Simon Cowell all over it, very similar to his Il Divo projects. Cowell had an ear for a good tune, and knew what would sell and how to package the moment to maximum effect. This is the type of album that comes along every so often and persuades people that they like opera, when previously they might have thought they did not. If it went on to introduce anybody to other singers in the genre aside from Paul Potts, no doubt he would be one of the first to cheer, but unfortunately, as with the Three Tenors, once out of the spotlight, so was the music. [This edition of One Chance includes the bonus tracks "O Holy Night" and "Silent Night."]

    Highly Recommended

My husband and I both love Paul's voice. This CD is one of our favorites to play. His wonderful voice and the songs that he selected for this CD provide such a soothing background for a relaxing evening at home.

    Awesome

Paul Potts is awesome - and not just his voice. His voice gives me the chills. He is such a humble guy with such a talent. He deserves all the happiness in the world. I hope he makes more CDs. He is wonderful. I never listened to Opera before. And the Christmas songs are a great addition.

    Bonus is a minus

You can't go wrong with the classics on this CD and Potts does them justice. But WHY did Simon C. choose to stick two Christmas songs on the CD as bonus tracks???? If you like to play your CD's on repeat at work or at home as I do, you will find the addition of Christmas music quite annoying.

"I don't know what it is about you, Paul...

...but every time you come on I just want you to do well. And you just did again. And it was magic.” Those were the words of Simon Cowell (yep, you read that right) after Paul Potts’s semifinal performance of “Con te partiro.” It sums up what so many of us feel after listening to Paul sing. Are there technical flaws in his singing? Sure. One can say that of any other recording artist of any genre--but it doesn’t diminish their appeal. And Paul, after all, can be forgiven for any flaws we hear on this album: he was fresh off a four-year hiatus from his singing (for a number of reasons, which one can read about elsewhere) and thrust into a studio just one week from his stunning win on Britain’s Got Talent. What you’ll hear in Paul’s voice is far more than the sum of its parts, however they’re sliced. You’ll hear the ineffable, indescribable “something” that so many of us around the world have discovered. The flaws that do disturb me on this album—at least they did on the initial release—are production-related. The mixing was obviously hastily done to get this album to market quickly, and (unless those errors have since been fixed) it shows. Even so, this album is a treasure—and one that will be played over and over and over again. I promise.

This young man has a wonderful voice. He still has room for growth but his CD is well worth the price if you enjoy listening to this type of music.

    Destiny

It seems that all the forces of the universe came together in one moment for Paul Potts, and his destiny emerged. This first CD is worth every penny. It is a ray of hope for the talented unknown.

    Love this singer

This guy's voice never fails to give me chills, and the first time I saw him on the TV show Britain's Got Talent (I currently live in the UK), his voice actually moved me (and many people in the audience) to tears.

Who knew I would like Opera

Andrew Sullivan's blog featured a YouTube entry about the U.K. version of American Idol. For some reason I decided to play it. Afterwards, I knew I would buy this guy's first CD. Paul Potts was his name. It was moving to hear him sing and to see how shocked he was to find out other people actually thought he was really good. He was an average guy like me and I wanted him to succeed. I was thinking his first CD would be a letdown but actually I liked his CD as much as my first introduction to his singing. My wife liked his CD, too. Paul, thanks for introducing me to Opera.

    Bring out the tissues

When Paul performed on Oprah on Nov. 6th, she said, "People in our audience are crying and [they] don't even understand Italian. That's when you know." And those of us who have listened to Paul know he has the ability to bring tears time after time. Fantastic... can't wait till his next album.

When I saw and heard Paul Potts on Oprah, tears came to my eyes. I was tapeing the show. I had my husband listen, he felt the same as I. We bought the Album last night. The orcestra is great also. Worth every penny. The people that say it is not opera should take a minute and feel the music. Paul has a great voice.

    Absolutely beautiful!

I am not an opera fan but Paul Potts' voice moves me to tears every time I hear it ... even if I don't understand the words! Beautiful doesn't begin to describe his music.

Let's see - a real tenor? Does that mean, a so called "professionally trained" voice who sounds more like a machine than a human, whose talent was made, not born? And now your advice on pop music? How about a "real" band - not one like, say the Beatles, who never studied formally? I like Paul Pott's voice - I think he's the people's tenor or singer, or whatever you want to call him. I have read many reviews by British fans on their sites. Most love Paul. A few who think they are opera experts seem to find it great folly to call those who like Paul uninformed opera novices and always try to direct us to "real" opera. These stuffy opera experts can just return to their little opera house in the sky and leave us alone. I am happy with who I am. I don't have to put down others to find my own identity!

I have the import CD and I love it. Paul Potts' voice has a beautiful emotional quality unmatched in any other tenor I have ever heard. If you like his voice, you will enjoy the CD. Judge for yourself.
