Meet the Author

While still in her teens, Anna DePalo began her first novel. She wishes she could say this early manuscript went on to receive numerous accolades and bring her fame and fortune. Instead, that first attempt--well, all three pages of it--hit the trash heap, and she understood why many authors throughout history have burned their papers for posterity.

Anna went on to live in Italy and England, graduate from Harvard, earn an advanced degree in political science, practice intellectual property law, and marry the man of her dreams.

One day, Anna decided to give fiction writing another try, believing that having done some more living would help her tell the truth about life in the pages of made-up stories. This time she didn't stop at three pages--or even 93. Writing during weekends and evenings, after working long days as an attorney, she finally typed her first "The End." That first finished manuscript, Having the Tycoon's Baby, soon sold to the Silhouette series, became a bestseller and award winner, and has been published in over 10 countries to date.

These days, Anna has happily traded a lawyer's navy-blue suits for a full-time writer's blue jeans and is given to toasting new story beginnings while ensconced in front of her home-office computer. Readers can contact her through her web site at www.annadepalo.com or directly at anna@annadepalo.com.

The hallmarks of New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Kasey Michaels' writing are humor, romance and happy endings. The importance of upbeat, entertaining fiction was brought home to Kasey when her eldest son became very ill. During the long months while he was in the hospital after his kidneys failed, she noticed that the nurses who cared for the sick children and the mothers who spent long hours at their bedsides often had a romance novel in their back pockets. She began carrying her own romances to the hospital in a small suitcase, reading and then sharing and trading them with the other moms.

"We were living in a world too real in that hospital," Kasey says today. "We all functioned at the highest level--there was no choice but to function, to persevere--and we all occasionally escaped that world into the hope and happy endings of romance novels."

Kasey had actually written her first book just before her son's illness. She penned her second book during those long months in the hospital, and it became The Tenacious Miss Tamerlane.

Since then, Kasey has gone on to write about 100 more books, and to receive a trio of coveted Starred Reviews from Publishers Weekly. The third was for her first HQN title, The Butler Did It, which was also a 2005 nominee for the Romance Writers of America's (RWA) highest award, the RITA Award and Publishers Weekly's Quills Award. She is already a recipient of the RITA Award, a Waldenbooks and BookRak Bestseller Award, and many awards from Romantic Times magazine, including a Career Achievement Award for her Regency-era historical romances.

Kasey has also appeared on the Today Show, and was the subject of the Lifetime Cable-TV show A Better Way, in conjunction with Good Housekeeping magazine, a program devoted to women and how they have achieved career success in the midst of motherhood (short version: "with great difficulty").

Kasey has written Regency romances, Regency historicals, category books including novellas and continuities and a few series "launch" books, and single-title contemporaries. Hers is also the twisted mind behind her ongoing Maggie Kelly mystery series that stars a former romance writer turned historical mystery writer. She is also the author of the highly praised nonfiction book, written as Kathryn Seidick, Or You Can Let Him Go, which details the story of Kasey and her family during the time of her eldest son's first kidney transplant.

Kasey and her husband of more than 40 years live in Pennsylvania with their two neurotic Persians, Princess and Peaches. They are proud parents of four and grandparents of two. Each summer the entire family volunteers to help out with the golf tournament her grown son founded to benefit the Gift of Life Donor Program of Philadelphia. Monies raised contribute to the costs of transporting the youngest members of Team Philadelphia to the annual Transplant Olympics.

Brenda is a die-hard romantic who married her childhood sweetheart 30 years ago and still proudly wears the "going steady" ring he gave her when she was 15. Because she began believing very early in the power of love and romance, she can't help but write stories with happy endings. She is an award-winning bestselling author of more than 10 romance novels and looks forward to increasing that number. She and her husband live in the city where they were born, Jacksonville, Fla., and have two sons in college. She has a B.S. in business administration and presently works in management for a major insurance company.

Coming home from work and sitting down to her computer to weave love stories is the highlight of her day. She and her husband spend time together traveling to discover those romantic places she could use as settings in her books.

Brenda would love to hear from her readers. Write her at P.O. Box 28267, Jacksonville, FL 32226. You can also contact her through her email address, GJBJ@aol.com.

Nora Roberts has described this author's work as having "engaging characters, stories that thrill and delight, shivering suspense and captivating romance." Of the same author, Sandra Brown says "Her name on the cover instantly identifies the book as a good read." It will come as no surprise to readers of women's fiction that these authors are speaking of Ann Major.

However, it may surprise her peers to know that writing does not always come easily to Ann. "I love being a romance writer, even though writing is very hard work for me as I am not the kind of writer who lives to write. I love my life--my kids, my parents, my cats, my hobbies, just the little rituals of everyday life. These precious experiences give me the energy and the material so that I can write."

These words should come not only as encouragement to those of us who share this struggle, but also as an indication to the heights that can be scaled when an individual is as focused and driven as Ann.

A native of Texas, Ann's postsecondary education is as varied and far-reaching as the woman herself. Ann attended Del Mar College, the University of the Americas in Mexico City and the University of Texas in Austin, where she received a B.A. in English and Spanish. She taught school for two years before going on to receive her M.A. in English and Spanish from Texas A&M University.

A model of perseverance, Ann began writing when her first child was born and sold her first novel six years later. "I taught myself how to write without the aid of other writers, writing books or writing courses. It was a very lonely and solitary pursuit." Yet Ann never once considered giving up and, as a testament to her dedication, she has written over fifty books to date for the Silhouette Romance, Special Edition, Intimate Moments and Desire lines, and consistently tops bestseller lists.

A founding member of the Romance Writers of America, Ann is also the coauthor of the article "The Contemporary Light Romance," which has been collected in the book Writing and Selling the Romance Novel.

In addition to her career as a novelist, Ann is an accomplished pianist. She has played for well over thirty years and has studied music at the university level. Fluent in Spanish, Ann calls Corpus Christi, Texas, home when she is not traveling.

Daughter of a career air force veteran, Merline Lovelace grew up at bases all over the world. Living in Newfoundland and France and almost half of the fifty states as a child sparked a lifelong love of travel she continues to indulge to this day.

A Woodrow Wilson scholar, she graduated magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from Ripon College, WI, with honors in German and Russian. She also studied Mandarin Chinese at Princeton University and Middlebury College, VT; earned a masters from Troy State University, AL; and attended Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.

During her twenty-three year military career, Colonel Lovelace served tours in Taiwan, in Vietnam, and at the Pentagon with the Joint Chiefs of Staff. She commanded Eglin Air Force Base, the biggest and best base in the air force, and is a distinguished graduate of Squadron Officers' School, the Armed Forces Staff College and the Air War College. Her many military awards and decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster and the Bronze Star.

When she hung up her uniform for the last time, Colonel Lovelace decided to combine her love of adventure with a flair for storytelling, basing many of her tales on her experiences in the service. Since then, she's produced one action-packed sizzler after another. She now has sixty published novels to her credit, many of which have made USA TODAY and Waldenbooks bestseller lists. Over eight million copies of her works are in print in thirty countries.

Merline's novels have won numerous honors, including the Romance Writers of America's prestigious RITA Award--the Oscar of the publishing world. She's also very proud of the fact that the University of Oklahoma chose her as the 1998 Oklahoma Writer of the Year, adding her name to a roster of literary luminaries that includes Louis L'Amour and Tony Hillerman.

Married for more than thirty-five years to the handsome hero she met her second day in the air force, Merline enjoys golf, travel and long, lively dinners with friends and family.

Tessa sold her first Silhouette Desire book after an online pitch on the eHarlequin.com Web site. "It was both scary and exciting, a bit like riding a roller coaster," says Tessa. "Once it started, everything happened so fast."

Several sales followed in quick succession. A keen reader since childhood, Tessa is thrilled to join the author community here at eHarlequin.com. "It took a while to get over the unreality of it all, but it finally started to sink in. There's nothing more satisfying than working on a new story. I love getting to know a whole new set of characters and finding out what they want from life."

There's one piece of advice that Tessa credits with getting her through the publication process. At the first weekend writing course she had ever attended, romance author Robyn Donald said that, to be published, a writer needed three things: talent (which hard work could polish), perseverance and luck. That stuck in Tessa's mind, and so her advice to would-be authors now is: "Hold on to your dream. Keep writing and never give up."

You can contact Tessa though her Web site at www.tessaradley.com. And while you're there, don't forget to check out the fun page and enter Tessa's latest contest. Or you can come read with Tessa over at Team Novelchicks, part of the eHarlequin.com 2007 10,000 Book Challenge.
