New York Police detective Dave Strauss is haunted by the one case he couldn't solve. A schoolgirl vanished off the streets of Brooklyn, with only a trail of blood and a series of untraceable phone calls from "the Groom" hinting at her fate. Now the cold dark night has engulfed another young girl--but this time she is part of Dave's family. He and his wife, Susan, know fourteen-year-old Lisa has not run away, and they know her disappearance is not just a tragic coincidence. And once the first phone call comes, they know she's not alone....

Editorial Reviews

Bookgasm - Mark Rose
"One Cold Night is one of those fast-paced weekend reads, with some wonderful law enforcement characters...a great common-man deconstruction of Nabokov's LOLITA, and--at its core--a heart that cares about the people within its pages."
Mysteries Galore - Nancy Eaton
"We know that when [Katia Lief] writes a book it is going to be a thriller and she does not disappoint the reader with this one. This is an engrossing read that has many twists and turns. This book is highly recommended."
Rendezvous Review Magazine - Rendezvous Review
"I was sucked into the book like Harry Potter and felt I was living each minute...The story is full of nuanced characters that make it come alive. Add that to the jagged emotions, incredible tension and gritty street feel and you've got a really good book."

(winner of the May 2006 Rosebud of the Month Award--Rendezvous Review Magazine)
New Mystery Reader - Stephanie Padilla
"[Lief] hits all the right notes with intelligence and compassion in this very taut tale of past mistakes and ruined souls...we can see an author who has much more to offer than the standard suspense...leaving the reader eagerly looking forward to the next."
Book Fetish
"Jam-packed with heart stopping suspense, One Cold Night is a book not to be missed. Ms. [Lief] has a magnificent way of bringing each character to life in this very fascinating and intriguing tale."

I like the Strauss husband and wife, and the daughter is believable. It gives away the abductor too soon, but still a good read.

This read started slow at first and then the suspense was there. You will like how this book finishes. I enjoy her books, will read more.

The story was better after the first few chapters. It was a bit wordy and repetative at times but the end made up for most of it. If you lhave a cold winter night and have some time, this book will keep you entertained.

Great read with twist and turns that keep your mind moving. A missing girl, possible shattered love by listening to what her parents thoufht best "for the family". Sad how life all intertwines and you never know what to expect.

The writing was a bit rough around the edges at times, But it progressively improves as the book unfolds. Interesting plot, likeable characters, and really engaging dialogue. You will have trouble putting this nail-biter down for more than a few minutes at a time.

First book I read by this author. She kept me guessing all the way to the end and her ability to infuse the element of surprise into the story when you think you've got it figured out is something that is so hard to find. She intertwines each character intricately into the plot so that you feel a genuine connection to the characters. I now own several of her books and have shared them also..with the same result.

2 girls disappear, same age, similar looks..What is going on? only 237 pages in this book so options are limited but the thrill is in the chase not just figuring out who done it.

Hard to put down!

Richly woven characters, a complicated marriage, and a kidnapped young girl make this story a must read! I will purchase more from this author right away!

It didnt hold my interest AT ALL, and i am a huge fan of these types of books (mystery and crime) and can usually get into just about every book in this genre. But, not this one. Glad it was only 99 cents.
