Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Joella Peterson
One-Eyed Jack is the first in the "Faces of History" series—a series that is focused on telling stories of how historical characters had faith in God in different periods of history. Nate is a tween living in rural Montana. His father doesn't like dogs, but all Nate wants is a dog. When Nate and his father ride around their open-range ranch to gather their cattle and discover a weak little puppy, Nate's pa lets him take the puppy home so that he won't die. Still, Pa doesn't want the puppy to stay—especially when he gets into more and more trouble. This story is written for an early tween, yet the pictures distract from the story and make even Ma and Pa look like teenagers. With a heavy dose of moral dos and don'ts on every page, readers will have to wade through a lot of "lessons" to even get to the storyline (not to mention the verses and verses of songs thrown in whenever Nate has to work or walk from point A to point B). Readers might not pick up this moral tale on their own, but many parents will like the messages of obedience and faith scattered throughout each chapter.
