All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
One Good Friend is the American major-label debut for George Canyon, a Canadian country singer whose 1999 eponymous debut made a few waves in his homeland. It still took him a long time to cross over into the American market -- a long five years separates that record and the stateside appearance of One Good Friend in the fall of 2004. During that time, he went through the Nashville production line, shedding some of the Canadian quirks and winding up as a likable, straight-ahead neo-traditionalist country singer. Canyon has a nice tenor voice, one that he can twist into a good approximation of George Jones when he wants to as he does on the novelty highlight ...

Canyon has a nice tenor voice, one that he can twist into a good approximation of George Jones when he wants to as he does on the novelty highlight "Workin' on Ten", but this record is too smooth and friendly to be hardcore honky tonk. That's just used as a bit of flavor on a record that's cheerfully middle-of-the-road country: catchy but not too poppy; professional but not too labored; friendly but never pandering. Canyon doesn't yet have a distinctive on-record persona, but he's a friendly, ingratiating vocalist with good taste for engaging, if somewhat generic, material, and that makes this a good American introduction to this promising Canadian singer. It may not be a home run, but it's a straight-down-the-middle successful double.

Quality Universal South Debut Album For George Canyon

It's a real challenge picking a favorite from this quality cd. George Canyon is a very talented singer/songwriter. #1 "Who Would You Be" a poker game among friends where they pick who'd they'd like to be if they had the chance. #2 "Unfinished" an airplane flight gone awry, with life flashing before his eyes. Gripping story song. #3 "Workin' On Ten" up-tempo catchy lyrics and tune about how lucky this guy feels to date his knock-out girl. #4 "My Name" tear jerker told from unborn baby's view. #5 "I'll Never Do Better Than You" great love story song that states desires for better 'things' in life, but realizes he already has the best spouse. #6 "Hell Or High Water" up-tempo catchy tale of man desiring the preacher's daughter, even though he knows it's wrong. #7 "Letting Go" haunting story of a soldier's struggles, with superb vocals by George Canyon and Paul Brandt. #8 "You're In The Right Place" good story song that gives examples of one road in life ending and a new one beginning. #9 "Bird In December" relates to a girl with a broken heart who didn't leave a bad relationship in time. #10 "One Good Friend" how great it is to have a wife that is "one good friend" along with being a treasure as a spouse.

This will be a good friend to all who listen!

I expected a good CD from George Canyon but this far exceeded my expectations. It's outstanding! Most CD's have some fluff but there is not one weak song on this one. What sets country music apart from other genre's is the great story telling and every song on this CD tells a terrific story. They all bring out some emotion within the listener with some bringing you to tears, some making you want to roll down the windows and crank it up and some just make you feel good and treasure those you love. It's a perfect balance of songs in a variety of tempos. And through it all the importance of faith, family and music to George cannot be missed. And of course that unmistakable voice of his makes it perfect. It's a CD that can be appreciated by more than just country fans. Buy it; you won't be disappointed!
