I could not put this book down. It was a heart wretching--but oh, so touching story. Her characters were human with human foibles and fears. This needs to be reprinted and reissued.
I love the fact that Mrs. Kelly explores all different backgrounds and character traits in her novels. She is a master at character development. She usually has quite a humorous touch as well. However, this novel, while continuing her tradition of well-fleshed out main characters, has a rather serious tone. She deals with themes of war, personal demons and unwed motherhood. Overall, it is so wonderful to encounter someone who obviously doesn't take her story and character ideas from the same cookie-cutter that most romance authors regrettably frequent much too often. Thank you, Carla, for your first novel in years. I can't wait for the next one!
