Overview

A poignant and satisfying story of hope, Kimberla Lawson Roby's One in a Million beautifully shows us the difference between what we think we want and what we actually need to be truly happy.

Kennedi Mason thinks she's the luckiest woman on earth. She loves her job, she has a wonderful best friend, and she's been married for ten years to her soul mate. There's nothing she can think of that could make her life any better.

Then one fateful day Kennedi receives a piece of news that will turn her world upside down. She's excited about it, and she knows that her husband, Blake, will be over the moon. He has always dreamed of this one thing happening, and she can't wait until he comes home so she can tell him.

But when she sees Black that evening, he has a special anouncement of his own. It shocks Kennedi into silence and wipes the admission she was planning to make right out of her mind. In an instant, her life and her marriage have changed, but not at all in the way that she had expected.

"Kimberla Lawson Roby really knows how to cook up treats for her readers. And just like we clamor for goodies at The Cheesecake Factory, you're going to devour One in a Million as if it were that restaurant's Brownie Sundae Cheesecake." —Essence

Chapter One

Kennedi sat on the family room sofa, completely in a daze. This just couldn't be, was all she could think. Of course, she'd only learned the incredible news less than thirty minutes ago, but still, it just wasn't sinking in the way she needed it to. It didn't seem real, and the more she replayed the entire scenario, over and over, the more it felt like some fantasy—like some crazy dream her subconscious had concocted.

She was trying her best to accept what she now knew had to be the truth, but she wasn't sure how to deal with it. She wasn't sure what her next steps should be, although she guessed the first thing she needed to do was call her husband, Blake, on his cell phone. There was no doubt he'd be just as stunned as she was, and she couldn't imagine telling anyone else before telling him, not when this was the one thing he'd been hoping for ever since they married ten years ago.

Kennedi hurried into the kitchen, picked up the cordless phone, and dialed Blake's number. It rang four times before going into voice mail, and she wondered why he wasn't answering. He'd left for the health club more than two hours ago, but normally he only worked out for about an hour, meaning he should have been on his way home by now. Still, she left him a brief message.

"Hi, honey, it's me. I have something really, really important to tell you, so call me as soon as you get this, okay? Love you."

She ended the call but took the phone with her and headed back into the family room. She hoped he would return her call pretty quickly, because for some reason, she was finally starting to feel truly excited. She was starting to feel a lot happier as the seconds passed, and now she couldn't wait to tell him everything. As a matter of fact, she was now so blissfully beside herself and so dying to tell someone that she considered calling her best friend, Patrice. And she would have, except she knew Blake would be livid if he learned he hadn't been told first, so instead, she dialed his number again, and again, and again. However, it was all to no avail, and she was starting to get worried. Either that or her nerves were simply getting the best of her. She wasn't sure which it was, but she knew she needed to try to calm down. She needed to focus on something totally unrelated to this remarkable news she suddenly couldn't stop smiling about.

Kennedi walked back into the kitchen again, pulled a glass from the cupboard, pressed it against the ice dispenser inside the refrigerator door until seven or eight cubes fell inside, and then set it down on the granite island. Next she opened the refrigerator, removed a pitcher of red grapefruit Crystal Light, and filled her glass to the brim. She loved this flavor, and besides the FDA's recommended eight glasses of water a day, she hardly drank anything else. She did have an occasional caffeine-free soda every now and then, but never more than a couple times per month, thanks to the pact she and her mom had made a few years ago. They'd both agreed to forgo caffeinated drinks altogether and to drink carbonated drinks only once in a while, but this was after her mom had been diagnosed with breast cancer and Kennedi had read an article stating that caffeine had been suggested as a possible risk factor for her mom's illness. Needless to say, her mom had given up her daily before-work vanilla latte from Starbucks almost immediately, and unlike Kennedi, she'd even given up drinks that contained artificial sweeteners. She'd quickly begun taking every precaution she could, trying her best to combat the horrible disease that was attacking her.

But sadly, in the end, none of her new health-conscious efforts, the removal of both of her breasts, chemotherapy, or radiation had been enough. The doctors had done all they could do, and actually, for about a year or more she'd remained in remission. That is, until six months ago, when she'd slipped back out of it and then passed away three months later.

Now Kennedi was looking through the patio doors in tears. She wasn't weeping uncontrollably, the way she had the entire first month after her mom's funeral, but right now she would have done anything, anything at all, to see her mother again. She'd have done anything to have her back with her, even if only for a short while, because she missed her terribly. She missed the woman who would have given her last dollar if it meant helping someone else.

Although, as an only child, Kennedi couldn't thank God enough for allowing her the chance to take care of her mom. At first, she hadn't known what she was going to do, but Blake had made it clear that it was more than okay for her to take a leave of absence from work so she could spend as much time with her mom as possible. Needless to say, this was exactly what Kennedi had been hoping she could do, but she'd worried about their finances. She'd worried that, for the first time since they'd gotten married, they wouldn't be able to pay their bills on time. But Blake had promised her they would be fine. He'd told her that they wouldn't be able to spend money on unnecessary items, but that they also wouldn't end up with credit problems either. He'd told her that he loved his mother-in-law no differently than if she'd been his own mother and that allowing Kennedi to take a leave without pay was the very least he could do. He'd insisted that living without two incomes was a sacrifice he had no problem making, and Kennedi loved him so much for what he'd done. She loved him because not every husband would have made such a loving and very selfless offer.

On The Edge of My Seat

I was reading the reviews and it almost discouraged me from reading this book right away. I'm so glad I went ahead and went with my first mind anyway. This book is probably one of the best books I've read to date. It's on up there with one of my top favorite books. It kept me on the edge of my seat and I wanted to know what was going to happen next. I don't want to spoil the book by giving names/scenarios of the characters, but just know when you read it, you will not want to put it down! Awesome!

DO NOT PURCHASE, BORROW OR READ THIS BOOK

I will admit this was the very first time reading this author but if I didn't know any better I would think it was the first book she ever wrote. The storyline itself was a great concept but the writing was horrible. The amount of detail on frivilous stupid things was beyond annoying. The fact that she felt the need to explain every little detail and for no reason but to put more words on the page was ANNOYING. I've been reading books since I was five years old so that's over 35 years of reading and NO AUTHOR has every pissed me off like this one. I had to literally skip over three chapters (when they went shopping on Michigan Avenue) because it was annoying. Not to mention I was listening to an audio book and the narrator was horrible. I wouldnt recommend this book to a stranger that was stuck in an airport for 18 hours.

I hope her other books aren't this bad and that this was a book she had to write to get out of a contract.

    Great Potential

This book "One in a Million" was very disappointing to me.....the beginning had so much potential when she won the lottery at the same time he wanted a divorce. I guess it was identifying with the wife so much and wanting revenge for her two timing hubby that did me in.

Not the Best But Still A Good Book

I thought this book was pretty good. It was realistic, and I actually couldn't put it down as I got further into it. I was definitely anxious to see what the turnout was going to be. This was the first book that I've read by Kimberla Lawson Roby. And although I wouldn't consider it the best book I've ever read by any author, I wouldn't mind reading another one of Roby's books in the future.

    Not An important buy

This book was not original and a little off beat. It was realistic in some ways. This book was just okay. In order to write this review I had to go back and read what this book was about in order to remember. So in other words not a book you will remember much after reading.

One of the worst books I hsve ever read

This book is so poorly written I would have thought a high school student had written it and not a New York Times Bestseller. That designation is what got me to pick it up off the shelf. I generally find Bestsellers entertaining if not anything else. The plot was so boring and so predictable. I could skip over whole paragraphs and still not have missed a thing. The interaction and the dialogue between characters is so stiff and fake. I couldn't even bring myself to finish it.

    Just Ok...

The plot is an interesting one. I think the characters could have been developed more. At times, it seems as if there was rambling. I skipped a few pages just to get to some interesting parts. I think the ending was very good as it wasn't one that you would have expected.

Not as good as the previous books....

This one was just 'okay'. I got it on audio and the narrator, a prized award winner, was so boring I almost stopped listening. Yes, her diction, pronunciation, enunciation, elocution, etc. were very good but her voice very much lack in character which almost made listening a job instead of enjoyment.

    Has Kimberla Lost her Touch?

As a BIG Kim Roby fan, I was not that pleased with One in a Million. The story started out GREAT, but fizzled in the end. We need another book focusing on Curtis Black 'or some other such character'. I'm still a fan, but One in a Million fell short of my expectations.

    A fun read!

I'm behind on my reading and missed the last couple of books by Kimberla Lawson Roby. The concept of this story intrigued me, and I think she did a good job with the story. The dialogue of family and friends, even strangers, was dead on and cracked me up I can just hear people saying those things (but I couldn't accept that a lottery winner wouldn't first get an unlisted number before claiming the money). The story had some nice twists that caught me off guard, which is always a good thing. This was a thoroughly enjoyable quick summer read. I recommend it.

Kennedi Mason has everything going for her: a loving husband, a good job, supporting friends and family. What else can she ask for? On a whim, she steps out of character and the result quickly turns her life upside down. The night she decides to tell her husband, Blake, about her good news, he also has some news of his own to share. After hearing what he has to say, Kennedi is speechless and doesn't reveal anything to Blake. One in a Million is a story about what you do when learning the life you have spent time building is based on lies and deceit. Kennedi is given the opportunity to start fresh and she quickly learns what true happiness is all about. One in a Million is a short read - easily can be read in a few hours. Although, I thought some of the drama was a little over the top, it showed what other people are willing to do to get a piece of one's good fortune. The Reverend Curtis Black makes a guest appearance. I recommend this book if you're looking for something short and light.

    Kimbrela Has Done It Again!

This was a fantastic book. Very quick read. I wish there was more to it, but overall it was a good book. After reading this book, I began to imagin my self in Kennedi's position 'as not to ruin the surprise for you readers'. This book was well thought out. I got pretty emotional reading it, which means it was well written. As usual, I can't wait unitl her next installment.

    Another keeper!

Great book! I was a little hesitant with buying this book, but my love for her books won me over! Even though the book wasn't about Rev. Curtis Black, I still loved it! I know, she has spoiled us with the Reverend. But I know that this book will lead to a sequel. It was too good not to have one.
