Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 1–5
Kizzy is a therapy dog, and this picture book begins with a television camera crew arriving at his owner's house to follow the pup on a day's work as a R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dog). Kizzy enters classrooms, the home of an elderly stroke victim, a speech-therapy clinic, and a facility for troubled teens, spreading encouragement and hope, and helping all of the individuals he meets practice reading and speaking. A brief explanation of the R.E.A.D. program follows the story. The writing is clear, simple, and accessible to beginning and older reluctant readers. The average-quality artwork is done in charcoal with little color (shades of blue, and black on white). The facial expressions are well drawn and Kizzy is sure to strike a chord with children. A serviceable addition.

    A reviewer

My resident critics, 4th grade Wynona Elementary, OK, all eyed the book with Kizzy on the cover before settling in to listen. They take their job as `apprentice critics¿ very seriously. They listened in rapt silence as the narrative began, and at the end agreed, `I wish Kizzy would come to listen to ME read.¿ As with other books in this Incredible Dog series, `Lady¿ the Therapy Dog, and `Boone¿ the Rescue Dog, Kizzy has an important story to tell. My students were very impressed that a little dog could do so much to aid people who struggle to read. The story of Kizzy and his job with those who must exert great effort to read was one that really touched a chord with my students who also have moments when they tussle over a word or phrase. The book provides a starting point for talking about reading, how hard it is to learn to read and comprehend what we have read, and how nice it is to read when we know no one will laugh if we miscall or misunderstand.

This BOOK is not just about KIZZY!

The 'Kizzy' book is not just about Kizzy, the dog. It is also about the people he 'touches,' and about the reader as well. Everyone has an 'issue' or 'shortcoming' which inhibits their image of themselves. But when you are met with unconditional love, affection and acceptance, which Kizzy provides, anyone can reach his or her full potential. In this book, it focuses on children, teenagers, and an elderly woman who are challenged in different areas. With Kizzy's help, they are able to improve their quality of life. I loved the book, and what it has to offer! I am proud to say, I own a copy of the book for myself, and have given it out as gifts.

Excellent to read with my grandkids

The text flows easily. The illustrations are great support. The story line is coompelling and elicited terrific positive responses from my 5 and 7 year old grandsons. This book is a winner!!
