One is Not a Lonely Number provides an authentic voice for Torah-observant teens. Characters that jump off the page and believable conflict and plot made this an enjoyable read. While Orthodox readers will appreciate the absence of groaners, the book is still accessible to those with less inside-knowledge. I particularly enjoyed the protagonist's synesthesia and math-obsession!

Meet the Author

Evelyn Krieger, the oldest of six children, grew up in Detroit, Michigan. As a child, she entertained her friends with imaginative stories and dance performances. The inspiration for her first poem came in the middle of the night when she was just eight years old. Evelyn has been writing ever since, and her essays and stories have won numerous awards. After years of serious ballet study, and later earning her master's degree from Harvard, Evelyn worked as a reading teacher, private tutor, and dance teacher. Today, she is a writer, learning specialist, and a homeschooling mom. Evelyn lives with her family in the Boston area.

    I bought this book for my 2 preteen sisters as a Chanukah gift a

    I bought this book for my 2 preteen sisters as a Chanukah gift and found that we were all 'fighting' to read the book at the same time! We all enjoyed every minute of this Excellent novel! I recently had the idea to introduce this book to my 4th grade students for read aloud. They absolutely LOVE it!
    Taliya 'One is not a Lonely Number's protagonist is practically a student in our class! you can feel her presence as we read the book, and I quote one of my students who after figuring out a difficult math problem said "The answer is 8" and then her eyes lit up "Talya's favorite number!".

    Unique story!

    Thirteen-year-old, math-whiz, Talia Schumacher, the narrator of One Is Not A Lonely Number by Evelyn Krieger, is an only child who wishes she wasn't. All her friends in her Jewish day school have siblings, which makes her want a sibling even more. Talia lives in a large home in the fictional town of Greensborough, Massachusetts with her wealthy and hospitable parents. Each week Talia's mother and father host a variety of guests for the Jewish Sabbath as well as other holidays. "Our house is an open house," Mrs. Schumacher tells Talia when she complains about having so many guests. Talia doesn't understand why her parents go above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to Jewish hospitality. One day, Gabrielle Markus, a twenty-three-year-old soul-searching ballet-dancer shows up on the Schumacher's doorstep. After a couple weeks go by, Talia realizes that Gabrielle isn't leaving anytime soon. Gabrielle's eccentric personality is driving Talia nuts. Soon Gabrielle becomes involved in Talia's life in more ways than she would like. Talia is sure Gabrielle is hiding a secret, and with the help of her three best friends, she sets out to learn more about Gabrielle's mysterious past. Along the way, Talia discovers things about herself, friendship, and family.
    Talia's personality and quirky number sense adds a special touch to this story, and themes of loneliness, friendship and unity are weaved into this fantastic read. The author breathes life into the characters through dialogue, personality and bits of humor. The twists and turns in the story kept me reading all night. Girls will enjoy this unique and highly interesting read from start to finish!
