If you have every fed a baby then this book will resonate. It is a challenge getting those spoons full of vegetables and fruit into the month and to the tummy. Most of us made a game of it, just like the Mama in this book "One little spoonful for your toes / One little spoonful for your nose" and so on. After some solid food, it is time for the sippy cup (where were those 20 years ago?) and then more food, but baby refuses and what a mess. There is food on Mama, baby, highchair and the floor. But baby has plenty of energy and after a good burp is ready to play. Kids will undoubtedly enjoy seeing and hearing about their daily routine and Aliki's pictures look like they come from real experience. Part of the "Harper Growing Tree" series, which includes tips for reading and sharing stories and a web site with additional information. 2001, HarperFestival, $9.95. Ages 1 to 2. PreS-"One little spoonful/for your toes./One little spoonful/for your nose" begins this delightful picture book for toddlers. The simple rhyming text and bright, cheerful watercolors softly outlined in pencil playfully depict the interaction between a mother and child at mealtime and the mess that's created. Eventually, they both become covered with food when the baby spits it everywhere and Mom is seen running to the scene with a big wet sponge and dish towel. The story ends with a final, neater spoonful and a burp, and the two heading off for some play. Filled with humor and action, this book is sure to hold the attention of wee ones.-Karen Land, Greenport Public School, NY Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Mealtime mayhem is the focus of this spirited look at a familiar scene. With one determined spoonful at a time, a harried mother feeds her rascally baby. As mother coaxes the food past stubborn little lips, chipper rhymes describe each body part that will benefit from the nutrition. "One little taste / for a hungry tum. / Open the door, / and down it goes. / YUM!" When mealtime is over, the food-spattered mom and tot need to clean up before they're ready for another adventure. Aliki neatly works the import of the verses into the artwork. Perched in the high chair with a stuffed monkey, the child points to the featured body part mentioned on both himself and his toy, providing ample opportunity for little ones to learn to identify the basics of their own anatomies. A vivid array of colors, ranging from the tropical blue of the high-chair pad to the deep yellow of baby's playsuit, captures the reader's eye. Familiar scenarios comically depicting baby's various grimaces and wanton flinging about of food are sure to elicit giggles from both sides of the food wars. All the fun and messiness a tot could want-without the tedious cleanup. (Picture book. 1-3)
