Overview

Encountering the Realities of Prostate Cancer provides a comprehensive patient's eye view of the clinical, emotional, relational and spiritual experience of prostate cancer from the time of first symptoms to diagnosis to treatment and to living as survivor with an advanced cancer that can return at any time.

The book discusses everything that results from a diagnosis of prostate cancer, from relationships to sex to social networking to finding support groups. And it explores feelings- why some men feel free to talk openly while others remain silent and what that silence is about. It teaches strategies for coping with the often-inappropriate responses when the individual tells relatives, friends and acquaintances that he has prostate cancer.

Encountering the Realities of Prostate Cancer shows:

  • How to become an informed advocate for your own particular clinical situation by knowing where-and where not-to seek information online
  • How to make informed judgments about a treatments validity
  • Why men with prostate cancer tend to deal with their illness quite differently than women who have breast cancer-and what that implies for a person's well-being

Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Mohamed T Ismail, MD(VA Medical Center Wilmington)
Description: Providing a patient's perspective of the experience of prostate cancer, this book discusses the diagnosis, evaluation, treatment options, and emotional aspects related to the diagnosis.
Purpose: The author provides insight into the experience of navigating a prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment. It is a unique perspective from a very well-informed patient. He also analyzes some of the business, medical, and political aspects of the disease.
Audience: The book is intended for patients who have recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer and their families, but it is also very helpful for allied health personnel such as social workers and clerical staff. Finally, healthcare providers might find this book very helpful in enabling them to see the disease from a patient's perspective.
Features: The first three chapters cover the author's initial diagnosis of prostate cancer. The next group of chapters describes in detail his experience with the tests he underwent and the therapy he chose to treat his cancer. Chapters 7 thru 9 describe various business and political aspects of the disease. The final section of the book describes spiritual well-being and living with prostate cancer.
Assessment: This could be a very useful tool for every patient after a diagnosis of prostate cancer as well as for their family members or friends. It is well written, simple, and to the point.
From The Critics
"An exceptional resource to help patients and family members make better and more informed decisions."-American Journal of Nursing, December 2012
