Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kip Wilson
One of titles in the "Bloodiest Battles" series produced by Capstone Press, this book engages readers with authentic black and white photographs and colorful maps. The layout draws in struggling readers by providing at least one large image per spread, and the book is clearly organized in basic chapters, which come directly to the point. Readers will learn about the circumstances of World War I that led up to this extremely bloody battle, the trenches and dugouts that made up the landscape near the Somme River, and the effects of the battle on the outcome of the war. Facts about the staggering number of men who fought and died on each side, along with descriptions of the weapons they used, round out the details provided. Glossary terms appear in bold with definitions both on the specific page and in the back of the book for reference, and a helpful index also appears in the back of the book. Overall, this book includes some great details about the Battle of the Somme and provides an idea of how this particular battle fit into the greater context of World War I. Reviewer: Kip Wilson
