Born and raised in the brothels of the California gold rush, Dutch Trahern worked for years to erase a childhood spent committing petty crimes and worse in order to survive. That past comes back to haunt him in the form of a woman he rescues from prostitution. Now his hard won respectability is threatened by an irresistible desire for a woman he shouldn’t want.

Well, I have to firmly disagree with the only other review posted to date (3/23/13). I suffered through this book and found her plotting to be incredibly weak, as well as her pacing and cast of characters. Yes, it is a bit of a cliff hanger, but I knew that as I started it. I however, will not be purchasing the sequel because it was really that awful. Thankfully I received my copy as part of a bundle I purchased containing several books written my different authors. This book was so below the caliber of the others, I am frankly surprised it was included. The glowing, over the top, very thought out review posted in March clearly looks as if the author herself posted it herself, just a thought.....
I thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Allyn's historical novel. Her research about nineteenth century San Francisco was impeccable, her plotting strong, her pacing excellent, and her cast of characters vibrant. Dutch was an intriguing man, a beta hero with a tortured past, but with a fine spirit and good heart - and his penchant for chocolate was such a nice touch! Edith was a beautifully wrought heroine, strong-willed and brave, with an indomitable spirit. Ms. Allyn also has a gift for bringing her secondary characters to full flower; every one of them rang true, from the ever loyal servants, to the villainous madam. If you love a great adventure, you will love ONE MOMENT'S PLEASURE. I can't wait to read the sequel!
