Children's Literature
Preschoolers will be drawn to this book, which includes everything from numbers, to animals, to hidden pictures. On each and every page is a hiding cat, just waiting to be found! While learning to count, the child is challenged each time 'But where's the cat?' The pages have playful pictures of a different animal: one moose, two crabs, three ladybugs, etc. Mixed in with each picture is a part of the cat peaking out. One time the tail, or head, or perhaps just an ear or paw is spied in the corner. In the end, we finally find the whole cat when it emerges to chase what any cat would come out of hiding for—20 mice! Kids will want to read this book because of the simple, but imaginative pictures, which have the look of vividly colored felt appliques. Thus, identifying colors can be added to the list of teaching possibilities. There is something for everybody. For 2 to 4 year olds it's a winner, for their bookshelf at home or in a preschool teacher's collection. 1999, Barefoot Books, Ages 2 to 5, $5.99. Reviewer: Kathleen Orosz

PreS-Gr 1In this successful concept book, children start with 1 grinning moose and work their way up to 20 scampering white mice, recognizing and counting some of their favorite animals in between. The creatures appear on single- and double-page spreads along with the numerals they represent. A repetitive refrain encourages readers to look for the orange cat that is hiding in each illustration. Never difficult to discover, the feline is often peeking out from behind the large number, or entirely obvious as it runs off the page. Children will feel triumphant when they do find it, as well as ready for the challenge of counting the named objects. Decorated with beads, rickrack, and buttons, Beatons felt-art pictures are brightly colored and feature cheery animals. Sometimes, however, the scenes can become a bit cluttered with designs and borders. Overall, a nice addition to counting-book collections, with lots of appeal for beginning counters and readers.Susan Marie Pitard, Weezie Library for Children, Nantucket Atheneum, MA Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
