Overview

From NYT Bestselling author M. MALONE, comes a heartbreakingly sexy new series...

Death took everything from him.

Jackson Alexander was born with the voice of an angel and his only dream was to "make it". But his devotion to his music meant he was too busy working to protect his wife. After her death, he made a promise to himself.

He'd never sing again.

Ridley Wells has a habit of picking the wrong men but she's never ended up on the radar of a Mafia don before. Hiding out with her twin sister makes the most sense except she never thought her sister would be halfway around the world. Or that she'd be mistaken for her sister by the sexiest man she has ever seen.

There's a dark, broken spirit inside of Jackson that she knows she can heal. But the depth of her lies threatens the trust between them until Ri has to make a choice.

Trust him or break him all over again.

~ ~ EXCERPT ~ ~

"No. Stay." Those two simple words halted her in her tracks. He smiled a slow, sexy grin before pulling open the second drawer in his bureau. He rummaged for a while, pulling out shirts and then pushing them back in. "I'm trying to find one of my shorter ones so it won't swallow you up."

"Oh, I like them longer. It'll hang lower and cover my legs like a nightgown."

He stopped digging and glanced at her. Then his eyes dipped lower to take in her bare legs exposed by the mid-thigh, terry-cloth shorts she wore. "Right."

He held out a shirt and Ridley took it carefully, making sure their fingers didn't touch.

"Well, thanks again. Good night." She fled the room, racing down the darkened hallway, not stopping until she reached the door of the guest room. She turned the handle and opened the door, but before she entered she looked back.

She had to.

Jackson stood in the same position next to his dresser. The heat of his gaze burned over her entire body and she shivered as her nipples peaked against her shirt. She didn't know him well enough to interpret the look on his face but she could interpret her body's response.

God, she wanted him.

He'd been nothing but a gentleman all day, seeing to her every need, listening to her vent and keeping her company. He hadn't made any moves on her, hadn't done anything suggestive or said anything provocative. Was he just being a good host and making sure she made it to her room?

Or was he imagining what she would look like when she stripped off her clothes and went to bed wearing nothing but his shirt?

I am now officially in love with the Alexander family. There was so much about this book that worked for me. First and foremost, I loved the romance between Jackson and Ridley. They had fabulous, explosive chemistry. I loved that Jackson works and lives the music industry. When he sang his song to her, I honestly melted. So sweet and romantic. I loved that Ridley is a gardener and how she started delving into those dreams with Jackson. The two of them together made both of them so much better.

I didn’t go into reading this book expecting to like it as much as I did. I tend to shy away from books primarily promoted as romance, rather than romantic suspense/paranormal/etc. I’ve never ready anything by M. Malone, but that will definitely change now (I’m currently deep in Book 3 of the Alexanders series). The only reason this was a half-star off was my confusion over Ridley’s race. On the cover, she looks white as can be, yet in the book, she refers to herself and her sister as “women of color”. Raina had trouble breaking into modeling because she wasn’t white enough. Yet in the descriptions when Jackson looks at her, there’s never a reference to any color (not white, not anything), and when they talk about Ridley’s hair, it’s always soft and flowing. So…was she half-white? Or what? I just felt this was a bit confusing. Now, on to all the absolute goodness about this book. Ridley’s on the run, and while running off to her sister’s was a bit of a boneheaded move, it fits in precisely with Ridley’s personality. She turns to the only family she has when she’s in trouble, and knows her sister will ultimately help her, no matter they’ve recently had a fight. Ridley is very confused, having witnessed her sort-of boyfriend/PI looking for her father die in a car wreck that turns out to not have been an accident. Jackson is a grief-stricken man, having carried the guilt for his wife’s death for several years. He didn’t kill her, but they argued just before she went off that fateful night, so he’s carried that around. He’s a music producer and former artist/singer. He has two adorable little boys who truly blossom over the course of the book. I also started to mark this book down a bit because Ridley was lying about who she was and I was afraid the author was going to carry it on for too long and then resolve it miraculously right at the end. Luckily, Ridley ‘fesses up before the 50% mark and they work on things from there. There was a nice background suspense story what with who’s breaking in, burning Ridley’s apartment, and so forth. I’ll admit I had my suspicions about who the ultimate villain was, but I certainly didn’t see why he was the villain until it was revealed. My bad. Hehe. Well done on that end, Ms. Malone. The cast of secondary characters (Ridley’s twin, Jackson’s brother and friends) rounded out the story nicely without overwhelming it. You see the gradual introduction of the next hero/heroine (Raina and Nick), but they don’t overwhelm this story, but rather supplement the Ridley/Jackson story while introducing the elements that will play into their own book. So, overall, a great 4.5-star rating for me. Can’t wait to finish the third book (the second wasn’t available through NetGalley, dang it).

My rating: 3.5 of 5 ¿ After a private investigator, Ridley had hired to find her father, was killed, she takes off for her twin sister Raina's place to hide out. Raina, a model, is out of the country on a shoot and Ridley is unable to get into the house, but neighbours mistake her for her sister and offer her a place to stay. Jackson Alexander, a widower with two little boys, doesn't hesitate to take his neighbour in. It's a long weekend and to get someone out to gain access to the house may be a problem. He is surprised at how taken he is with his neighbour all of a sudden, she never quite had this appeal for him before.  Ridley can feel a strong attraction for Jackson, but it takes her a while before she can trust him enough to feed him little pieces of the truth at a time. Eventually neither of them can fight the strong pull between them and inevitably they burn up the sheets, but there is still not full disclosure. And finally lack of trust, lies and betrayal all converge..... ****** I really enjoyed this book and think I will enjoy the series. Ms. Malone certainly does romance and erotica well, although the suspense portion can use some finesse. A few loose ends were left. Early on in the book a locksmith is called......that person never calls back and no one follows up. Also, at some point Ridley talks of her life in Florida and her work with gardening, this while Jackson supposedly still believes she is Raina, the model. Now it is possible she does something on the side, but a normal person would at the very least question her about it.....he doesn't and accepts the two completely opposite personalities as 'normal'. It would have been a bit more believable, had he been a tad more suspicious of her true identity. The fact that she wasn't questioned at all doesn't ring true.  Other than that, the interaction of the Alexander family, other than the Nick/Jackson issue, is delightful and warm. The depiction of the little boys is great, their little quirks and naughty behaviour recognizable and funny. Jackson as a (very!) young father, caring and laid back, and Ridley has just the right touch with them, intuitive and insightful. Just as she seems to be with everyone she encounters. A sweet, and most definitely hot, easy read from Ms. Malone!! **ARC courtesy of NetGalley and CrushStar Romance in return for an honest review.**

I just love this series. I re-read Books 1 and 2 while waiting for Book 3. They're great and don't disappoint. Can't wait for Elliot and Kaylee's story.

I loved this book. I first read the free preview, not having realized that it was only the first half of the book. As soon as I got to the point where it stopped, I immediately went to my computer and bought the whole book, along with the second one in the series. M. Malone does a great job of really giving you insight into the characters, as well as keeping things just suspenseful enough that you want to keep turning the page. This is a great romance story and a must read.

I read this book second as I had gotten Sam's book first for free. I loved the characters so much that I came back and read Ridley and Jackson's story. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and the Alexander family is the kind of family everyone should have. A fun read with sex, funny family moments, and live.
