Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
The "George and Martha" series of books are ageless in their appeal, and this book, written in 1976, has two stories that will continue to amuse and delight young readers. George and Martha are hippos who are best friends. In the first story, Martha is nervous about going to a scary movie. She finds out that she likes the movie, but George is hiding under his seat. He says that he is looking for his glasses, but Martha reminds him that he does not wear glasses. When the movie is over, George is white as a sheet, but he offers to hold Martha's hand so that she is not afraid when they are walking home. In the second story, George is going to his secret club, and Martha wants to come along. When George says that it is a secret club and he cannot let her in, Martha is furious. George goes into his secret clubhouse, and Martha makes a big fuss to get in. When she looks in, she finds that the secret club is really a Martha Fan Club and George is president. Simple and endearing, these stories provide a wonderful example of friendship. Reviewer: Vicki Foote

Meet the Author

James Marshall (1942–1992) created dozens of exuberant and captivating books for children, including The Stupids, Miss Nelson Is Missing!, and the ever-popular George and Martha books. Before creating his canon of classic, hilarious children’s books, James Marshall played the viola, studied French, and received a master’s degree from Trinity College. He also doodled. It was the doodles, and the unforgettable characters that emerged from them, that led him to his life’s work as one of the finest creators of children’s books of the twentieth century. In 2007, James Marshall was posthumously awarded the Laura Ingalls Wilder medal for his lasting contribution to literature for children.
