Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Claudia Mills
In this picture book accompaniment to the Disney/Pixar feature-length animated film, Brave, Merida, Princess of DunBroch, spends most of her days listening to her Mum dictate that "a typical princess must behave like one" (though, as we see from the illustrations, not necessarily obeying maternal rules against rough-housing, gobbling, chortling, and doodling). Merida savors a rare perfect day in which she, like Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday, can escape from the royal palace with "nothing to do but be me"—a day spent alone in the wild exploring, imagining, and daydreaming. Restored from her sweet Scottish holiday, she returns home bearing gifts: eagle feathers for her young brothers, tall tales for her dad, and for her mother? Well, in addition to a wildflower bouquet, Merida presents her strict mother with a new insight regarding the correct expression of her princess principle, explaining that while a princess must indeed behave like a princess, a princess should "never ever [be]typical." Purcell and Nolte, who worked together on the film Brave as writer/co-director and character art director, have created a picture book that stands on its own—more than a mere side "product" for the film. But even though readers will be glad to see exuberant Merida resisting royal stuffiness, her "gift" for her mother comes with the sting of a smart-mouthed rebuke. And is it only princesses who should be "always curious, always adventurous, and never ever typical"? Reviewer: Claudia Mills, Ph.D.
