Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
"Straw Hat" Luffy, this book's boy hero, really wants to be a pirate. His fellow villagers jeer at his goal, since he can't swim, due to having eaten a magic fruit that gives him the ability to stretch his body like rubber. However, Luffy isn't going to let a little problem like this stop him. He's further motivated when pirate captain "Red-Haired" Shanks (an eccentric seadog who might give Johnny Depp a run for his money) sacrifices his arm to a sea-monster to save Luffy's life. Ten years later, Luffy is still determined to make his dream come true, and he sets out to assemble to a crew and find a fabled treasure (the "One Piece" of the title). Luffy meets Koby, a cabin boy his age, who has been shanghaied by a lady pirate, and together they attempt to rescue Roronoa Zoro, a feared bounty hunter who is being held captive by the dread Captain Morgan. Everyone in this title has a seemingly impossible goal driving them on, whether it's Luffy's dream of being a pirate, Koby's of joining the navy, or Zoro's of become the world's greatest swordsman. It's this strong-and sometimes touching--motivation which carries the story along through episodes that mix comedy and violence in an inventive, energetic brew. Luffy uses his gum gum power at climactic moments, such as taking out Iron Mace Alvida, a lady pirate whose claim to be the fairest on all the seas is anything but accurate. One Piece is one of the world's most popular manga, having been spun off into a TV show, a video game and merchandising. With Pirates of the Caribbean spearheading a full-on pirate revival, One Piece should have no trouble finding an audience in America. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

Meet the Author

Eiichiro Oda began his manga career at the age of 17, when his one-shot cowboy manga Wanted! won second place in the coveted Tezuka manga awards. Oda went on to work as an assistant to some of the biggest manga artists in the industry, including Nobuhiro Watsuki, before winning the Hop Step Award for new artists. His pirate adventure One Piece, which debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 1997, quickly became one of the most popular manga in Japan.

    Definitely a Must-Read

I haven't read the mangas or graphic novels yet, but I'm on episode 230 on the anime TV series. Even though FUNimation only has up to episode 195 dubbed in English, the Jap subs are amazing as well. The best character I think is Zoro, which the idiotic producers at 4Kids renamed to 'Zolo'. Roronoa Zoro sounds much better than Roronoa Zolo, dont'cha think? Yes, anyway. I love the hilarity of One Piece and its originality. The most sad backstory of the characters would have to be Chopper. Poor fella. Oda is amazing! I'm surprised more people haven't heard of this spectacular series yet. If you're not sure about it, take it anyway. If you love laughing out loud, pirates, goofy attitudes, et cetera, then you should definitely check out One Piece. A must-have for teens & up!

Im in love with Luffy!! <3

Heres the thing im not a fan of shonen jump im more of a girl who loves shojo. But luffy changes that he's funny and i cant stop laughing when i read one piece. I love how one piece made the main character not bulky or to muscly. He's my type of guy funny and a joy to read.

    Pretty good

The first in a very good adventure series. the story is pretty straight forward a boy wants to become king of the pirate's.And while the low percentage of action in this volume may turn those off who are looking for the next dragon ball z,i must say that i am satisfied with this book and i am looking forward to the next one.

    One Piece!

Most manga are 100% serious, and One Piece was a good break. It's one of the funniest manga I've ever read! It has a perfect balance of action, hummor, and a little sadness. Once you start reading it's impossible to stop. The charactors are so fun and outgoing, and if you havent read these books yet, then your missing out! If you like more serious manga I would recomend Bleach, or Naruto. Oh ya girls can read manga too I do and I love it. I'ts not just for boys :)

    I Also Recommend:

    Pirate Fun!

This book is great. Luffy is one of those happy-go-lucky characters that's hard to take very seriously, but his enthusiasm is infectious, which is probably why he attracts the people that he does. His adventures within this first volume mostly arrive accidentally, but he sets off with a purpose that doesn't seem too far-fetched for him to achieve as he grows, though the journey has been set up as being rather difficult to undertake. Oda seems to already be setting things up for future volumes, as people come in and out of Luffy's life, and battles are waged with cut throat (but completely one-dimensional) villains. One volume in, I can't imagine how this wouldn't captivate an audience, so it's no wonder that this volume I have is the seventh printing of the book. It's a great light-hearted action comedy told in an amazing cartoony style that suits its characters and the fun world that Oda is slowly building.

A good read for anybody whose seen the anime. And even if you didn't see the anime this story will knock your pants off. The artwork is strange and original and the plotline is touching. Simply put, this story can be read by anyone who's willing to!

    We are!

You may have seen this at the bookstore and said: 'My little cousin/sibling/kid I babysit/son/daughter watches this on Fridays! I might get it for them!' Slow down, tiger, and you might want to just keep the book yourself. The manga is definitly not kid's stuff. It is, however, a good story. Monkey D. Luffy was a child who befriended a pirate captain, and has his head filled with dreams of the high seas. Unfortunately for him, he was beached he couldn't swim and was too young. After a misadventure including some bandits and the gum-gum fruit that made him a rubber man but took his ability to learn swimming, he vowed that he would start his own crew when he was older and become king of the pirates. The captain of the crew gave Luffy his signature straw hat, and several years later, he set sail. This story is about keeping promises and working for what you want, and the cheesyness and stuff about never giving up. To quote a character, 'Grit counts more than strengh.' Grab this book and start reading. Quoting the REAL Japanese theme song (translation, I think.) 'We are! We are! On a cruise!' So set sail!!

    Just an awesome series

I love one Piece. I would give my organs if the story ever asked for me to. For those of you who don't know, One Piece is huge in Japan, following in the footsteps of dragonball. Of course, the storys aren't anything alike, but I'm talking about social commentary, work with me here. One Piece follows the exploits of Monkey D. Luffy (Pronounced lOOfy), a 17 year old who's dream is to become the greatest pirate, because 'anything else would make him look bad'. To become the king of pirates however, Luffy needs to first assemble a crew! And boy, he picks the weirdest people to recruit. A PIRATE BOUNTY hunter to begin with, and later a theif who abhors pirates and steals their treasure. The main themes of One Piece are friendship, loyalty, and bravery. You'll have these messages blasted in your face in every chapter. Still, OP is an amazing adventure story, with it's humor and outstanding characters (Many with the predictable horrible pasts ;). The art for OP is excelent, most complain about it being too plain, but I think the plainess gives the story character. Speaking of the Characters, well, let's just say they're interesting. Oda's characters, whether they be friend or enemy, are always interesting and have great quirks about them. The one Piece story is excellent, and I highly recommend you add the one piece line to your manga collection. Viz is being slow with the releases, and this is a VERY long series, with no signs of stopping in Japan, so it'll probably be about 6 or 7 years before we have even 3/4 of the series released (And that's based off of dragonball's releases, and Viz is releasing the series at a phenomenal rate). One Piece is highly recommended, and is in fact the only series I can read in Shonen Jump that I will buy the Graphic Novels of to make repeat readings easier. So yeah, get this now and get ready for a new obsession!

    Highly interesting series

One Piece is one of my favorite mangas. I really like the unique character design and the pirate-themed plot. I hope you give this series a chance because I did too, despite my first impression of it, and fell in love with the story and characters so maybe you will too. 2 very enthusiastic thumbs up
