Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carolyn Mott Ford
The author and illustrator team up once again for a lovely story abut Little Hedgehog. While reading One Winter's Day kids enjoyed the fuzzy feel of Little Hedgehog's warm winter togs. In this book, they can see the glitter of raindrops on his umbrella, raincoat, hat, and boots. This is a story about friendship as Little Hedgehog helps his friends during a windy, rainy day. First he offers to share his umbrella with Mole and as they are tossed about by a gust of wind, the umbrella falls in the river. Then, when Fox points out that Mouse and her babies are in danger, Hedgehog and Mole use sticks to propel the umbrella like a boat to rescue them. They all decide to visit Badger but find that he is grumpy because water is coming through the roof. Once again, Little Hedgehog's umbrella saves the day. Little Hedgehog opens it and pushes the handle through the roof so the umbrella can catch all the rainwater. Reviewer: Carolyn Mott Ford

Little Hedgehog is back in this adorable picture book. He's excited about the weather as he finally gets to try out his new raincoat, boots, and umbrella. As he goes out for a walk, he encounters other animals and even has a few narrow escapes from the now-heavier rain, wind, and rising waters. The pictures are done in vivid pastels and are the stars of the show. Hedgehog's umbrella and rain gear have an enticing gloss that begs to be touched. While the story line seems to wander a little, the premise is simple and comforting, ending with hot cocoa and cookies at Badger's home. Despite the animals' ordeals, this book has a cozy, snuggly tone, and parents will take pleasure in sharing it while their youngsters nestle in. A great rainy-day read.-Adrienne Wilson, Edith Wheeler Memorial Library, Monroe, CT

Kirkus Reviews
Frequent collaborators Butler and Macnaughton present another Little Hedgehog story, this time about rain and a very special umbrella. After venturing outside, Little Hedgehog first helps a young mole during a rainstorm. When a fox alerts them to the sight of a mouse family in trouble due to rising waters, Hedgehog uses his umbrella as a boat to rescue the family. Later, the umbrella keeps Badger's house dry inside while the friends enjoy restorative cups of cocoa. The sweet story and illustrations serve to create an experience to which young children will certainly relate. Little Hedgehog is a good role model, showing loving concern, kindness and a generous nature, but there isn't much story beyond this feel-good message. The Butler/Macnaughton books always have a gimmick as a focus of the illustrations, in this case a shiny overlay on the umbrella and rain gear. The gentle story would have been just as effective, however, without the glittery umbrella and shiny raincoat, and the gimmick does nothing to affect its fundamentally ephemeral nature.
