Overview

They are the lone wolves of the battlefield. Tracking the enemy, lying in wait for the target to appear — then they shoot to kill. Armed with an unerring eye, infinite patience and a mastery of camouflage, combat snipers stalk the enemy with only one goal...

In World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and Beirut, American snipers honed the art of delivering a single deadly shot from nowhere — and devastating enemy morale. They met the enemy on his own turf, picking off officers, unwary soldiers, and even other snipers from extraordinary distances of up to 1 ½ miles. Now, these uncommon men tell their stories: of the emotions felt when a man's face came into their crosshairs and they pulled the trigger, of the nerve-wracking hours and days of waiting, motionless, for the enemy, of the primal savagery of a sniper duel.

Often trained haphazardly in wartime, and forgotten in times of peace, combat snipers were officially recognized after the Vietnam War, when the Marine Corps became the first military branch to start a full-time sniper school. One Shot-One Kill is their powerful record of desperate trials and proud victories.

A MAIN SELECTION OF THE MILITARY BOOK CLUB

Snipers made up a vital part of the American military machine in World War II, Korea, Vietnam and Beirut. They honed the vital art of delivering a single accurate shot from nowhere--devastating enemy morale. Here is a powerful tribute to these important but often overlooked fighters.

    Best Damn Sniper Book Period

Best military novel pertaining to snipers I have possibly ever read PERIOD!!! The way it's written the words used the stories told it makes you feel as if your there in battle with them. Okay so some parts are rather slow and repeat a lot but it's a minor nitpick. One of my favorite stories is of Carlos Hathcock in Vietnam with his spotter and most famous shot in history. Carlos and his spotter go after an enemy sniper in the foot hills and jungles of Vietnam and as they're crawling along at one point as he crawls up to a hill he catches a glint of the scope from the enemy and fires his spotter says "Holy Hell Carlos Ya Gottem Straight Through The Damn Scope!!" best thing I've ever read. My least favorite part is a story in world war two is when they're (a group of allied American soldiers) are in thick brush not much action not much killing but it is a very good story of a man and the weapon he uses in combat.
The authors use very good imagery symbolism and personification. Imagery in one scene from the book a Sioux sniper is hunting Nazis and he shoots him and he flails about for about ten seconds and he says" He flayed around like a deer after you done shotem in the neck." He also uses imagery by saying that a thicket of brush in Germany as a thicket of unbrushed cat hair." And personification by at one point saying that the scope becomes like a person after you pull the trigger.
All in all minor slow parts heavy shoot outs great information a well rounded story full of little bits of unknown glory and loss. Tragic fights and hard to swallow tales this is the book to read if you ever want to test the waters in military novels.

    Keeps You Rerading

One Shot One Kill is about the missions of snipers during the 1900s. This book includes stories from World War II, the Vietnam War, Korean War, and Beirut War. It contains the intriguing stories of Carlos Hathcock, Jim Land, Tom Rutter, and Ron Szpond. These life threatening missions have to be carried out very carefully. This book elaborates on some of the best stories of these extraordinary veteran snipers. I really enjoyed reading this book. It includes history and entertainment, the perfect mix! I very strongly recommend this book to the people whom enjoy reading about the Military.

    more from this reviewer

    This shot hits home.

A good book on the history of military snipers and personal stories from some of the best in the field. Word of warning though, it definitely isn't politically correct and very graphic. I would definitely recommend it though.

    Book report for English Teacher.

One Shot ¿ One Kill talks about the history and development of the sniper division. Not that long ago, snipers were looked down upon before as being cowards because they hid. Yet over time people began to realize how desperately snipers were needed. So instead of like before just taking men who scored well on marksmanship men are now being trained in the art of sniping. The book tells the stories of some of the things that happened to veteran snipers. It gives you in depths look at the mind and happenings of a sniper. I believe this was an all around good book, and highly recommend it to fellow readers of historical and military books. I recommend this book because when the men are telling there stories I almost feel as if I am there and am living it myself. It is well written and an easy read.

This is an excellent book about how U.S. snipers operated in Vietnam. It is a well written, easy to read book. It gives all of the insights of what a sniper is thinking and planning before making that certain kill. A great all around book
