Overview

“Daddy” is not a title Rue Murray wanted, but he never thought he’d have sex with a woman either. Now he’s the unwitting father of a newborn named Alice. Between bartending and cosmetology school, Rue doesn’t have time for babies, but he can’t give her up. What Rue needs is a babysitter, and he’s running out of options. He’s on the verge of quitting school to watch Alice himself when he remembers his reclusive new neighbor, Erik.

Erik Van Nuys is a sci-fi novelist with anxiety issues to spare. He doesn’t like people in general, and he likes babies even less. Still, with his royalties dwindling, he could use the extra cash. Reluctantly, he takes on the role of manny—and even more reluctantly, he finds himself falling for Alice and her flamboyant father.

Rue and Erik are as different as two people can be, and Alice is the unlikeliest of babies, but Rue has never been happier than when Alice and Erik are by his side. At least, not until he receives an offer that puts all his dreams within reach and he’s forced to choose: the future he’s always wanted, or the family he thought he never did.

**Mild Spoilers Funny and fresh. Warm and fulfilling. Surprisingly sexy. Dual POV THE STORY: A baby changes everything. In this initially light-hearted and humorously written story, a young gay man has to figure out how to bartend, go to beauty school and make sure his daughter has the best possible care. THE CHARACTERS: Rue, is a young "club boy" who decides to keep his baby. His decision creates havoc in his already hectic life, but caused me to instantly like him. His humor and outlook made it easy to want more Rue. Just ask Erik. You gotta love a man who thinks: "Might as well make like Lee and press on." Erik, oh Erik. Loveable geek, compassionate neighbor and sexually unaware introvert. He drinks Gatorade by the gallon, watches Star Wars to calm himself and needs a hair cut. Oh yeah, that haircut, tummy flips galore. "Do or do not. There is no try." Only Erik would quote Yoda in bed. Dusty is Rue's best friend and they are enrolled in cosmetology school together. He's sweet, kind and vulnerable. I'm really hoping for his HEA in the next book. There will be a next one, right? THE WRITING: This is a quick witted, solid read with a few minor bumps along the way. I didn't feel that there were any slow parts but some awkward sentences did seem to halt the story a time or two. The author's did an especially noteworthy job at portraying descriptive sex scenes that weren't just about the actions but actually about the sensations involved. If you're one of those girls who want to know what it "feels like" for guys, pick this one up right away. The author's also wrote terrific, easy to visualize characters that you would want to know in your life. They became endearing and it was a pleasure to watch them figure it all out. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You might find a bit of a love triangle, some building angst and what I hope is a possible cliff-hanger in this book. Read this book up for descriptive sex, tummy flips and characters that will work their way into your heart.

My Review: I challenge you to find a more unlikely love story than this one, but it is so incredibly sweet and endearing. I loved these characters and I adored their really incredible love story. This book is about Rue and Erik. Rue is most definitely a gay guy in all the stereotypical ways you think. He's flamboyant. He's going to cosmetology school. At nights, he works as bartender in a gay bar where he usually has to wear tiny, outrageous costumes. One night when he was drunk, he decided to experiment and nine months later, got Alice. He loves her and most definitely wants her, but up until she's living with him, he doesn't accept how hard it's going to be as a single father especially with his schedule and income level. Erik has lived next door to Rue for six months, but in that time Rue has never even seen him. The landlord told him that Erik is a nice guy who's a writer. Rue is desperate when he asks Erik to watch Alice while he's at school. The problem is, Erik has HUGE anxiety issues...to the point where he doesn't leave the apt. or ever interact with people, but he's also desperate for money because his book royalties have slowed down and his latest works haven't been contracted. Then, a magical thing happens...he starts taking care of Alice and begins to come out of his shell. He becomes friends with Rue and Rue's friend Dusty. The four of them form a pseudo-family. I cannot tell you how heart-warming this book is. Both Rue and Erik are such extreme characters, I really worried at first that I would be able to relate to them, but I quickly changed my mind. The book is told in 1st person POV and switches from Erik to Rue and back again every other chapter. It's so sweet watching their story and characters develop. Rue has been promiscuous, but has never really ever had a true romantic relationship. Erik has never ever even kissed another person before. They are complete opposites, but they are so good together in this little family unit they've all formed. Their friend Dusty is just the perfect addition. I loved everything about this book. The story. The characters. Little baby Alice who brings them all together. The romance. It was all just perfectly constructed and put together.

This is such a cute story. There are some issues I have with the story, but it doesn't detract from the story give. It's definitely worth a read.

WOW….I LOVE LOVE LOVE Erik in One Small Thing.  He is so freaking adorable!!  Loved this book SO much that I read it AGAIN in the same week.  I was thrilled that the second in the series, One True Thing, was about Dusty, because I loved his character as well.   WELL DONE, PIPER!  I will be reading all your other books.
