When former U.S. Marine photojournalist Gabriel St. James arrives in Shelter Bay to help out a fellow Marine, the last thing he expects is to meet a woman like Charity. A veterinarian with a past that would have defeated a less resilient woman, Charity still possesses a heart as generous as her name. Former Marine Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist Gabriel St. James arrives in Shelter Bay as a favor to a Semper Fi besotted battle buddy Cole Douchett (see The Homecoming). When he and Harborview Veterinary Clinic veterinarian Charity Tiernan meet at the nuptials he works a mission, they are attracted to one another. However, she considers a short fling with the visiting veteran as she has no time for anything permanent while running her "no-kill" shelter.
A rolling stone, he shocks himself as he wants much more from the animal doctor than a week-night stand though he agrees to a tryst to buy time in order to campaign for more. Although Gabe completed his mission that brought him to town and his head orders him to retreat, his rebellious heart delays his leaving hoping to persuade Charity they belong together. However as kids and a dog enter their lives he lacks the courage to move to the next level while she bravely embraces the change in their relationship.
The newest Shelter Bay contemporary romance (see On Lavender Lane) is an engaging tale that hooks the audience from the time the lead couple meets as the relationships matures over the course of the well written story line. Although there is some suspense brought by the kids but for the most part the plot is character driven straighter than the Bonneville Flats yet the talent of JoAnn Ross shines as readers will enjoy visiting Shelter Bay.

Gabriel St. James travels to Shelter Bay as a favor for a fellow ex-Marine. Shelter Bay will just be a quick in and out for Gabe. He promised to take pictures of his buddy's wedding. Next thing he knows he has a dog that the local vet thinks is perfect for him. Charity Tiernan is one veterinarian that intrigues Gabe more then he is willing to admit to at first.
Charity Tiernan moved to Shelter Bay for a simpler way of life and to escape her broken engagement. Charity has come into her own there and enjoys her life. She feels like she belongs there and lacks for nothing. After leaving her ex groom to be at the altar Charity was positive she wasn't ready to be attracted to anyone. Gabe St. James is like no man she has ever met. Even though he is tough and strong there is something vulnerable about him.
Charity and Gabe slowly circle each other in the time old ways of dating. Charity draws Gabe into the community and notices he isn't as uncaring as he initially seemed to be. Both go into this relationship knowing Gabe's stay on Shelter Bay isn't a long one but when their feelings grow deeper will Gabe be able to leave?
One Summer is exceptional. It is an emotional journey that will tug at your heart. Both Charity and Gabe has to let go of the past in order to give the future a fighting chance. The secondary characters add another dimension of feelings that will pull you in deeper. This story is another keeper from JoAnn Ross, her stories are a delight from page one. Looking forward to the next book from her.
