One Truth

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Mark Schwartz
Turkish multi-instrumentalist Tekbilek composes in the tradition of Sufi mystics; his originals are ornate and stark, suffused with an aura of contemplation. But don't let the traditional instruments fool you: Tekbilek has performed alongside forward-thinking jazz musicians Don Cherry and Karl Berger, and his ONE TRUTH is that there are many truths, infinitely expanding in the latticework of this passionate music.

Barnes & Noble - Carol Wright
Released in the summer of the great Turkish earthquake of 1999, ONE TRUTH's prayers and ecstatic expression seem especially moving. Omar Faruk Tekbilek, a master of the lutelike oud, ney flute, and numerous Middle Eastern percussion instruments, opens a window on the divine passion of Sufi poetry. These words of praise and devotion acknowledge that the same truth binds us all. The hypnotic title track, with its gently swaying cadence, brings up images of Sufi dancers swirling to the pulse of the universe. But on "Red Skies," Tekbilek induces trances with the fire of flamenco guitars, while doumbek-charged belly dance rhythms propel "Roman." On "ARA'ya," the haunting echoes of the ney flute evoke the chanting of prayers in a great mosque. The album ends with the street sounds of "Istanbul" as the delightful melody is led innocently away by the plinks of a toy piano.
All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Omar Faruk Tekbilek's One Truth continues his exploration of the mystical sounds of Sufism, blending Middle Eastern instruments like the ney flute and modern electronic textures into intense, intricate works. The album's songs of devotion showcase Tekbilek's technical skill as well as his intuitive understanding of this passionate and spiritual music.
