Overview

One, Two, Buckle My Shoe is a book with a new twist on a classic nursery rhyme.  Young children will learn to count from one to ten as they recite this favorite rhyme. Colorful abstract shapes transform into playful circus scenes with the turn of a page. Watch as the two polka dots magically become a clown's shoe; see ten different colored circles transform into juggling rings.  The grand finale comes to life in a spread where the circus performers entertain, amaze, and amuse.

Bright and clear numbers (numerals and words) help toddlers learn to count in a way that's never been so much fun.  Come on into the big top and enjoy.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Square die-cut windows offer clues about what comes next in this Big Top twist on the classic nursery rhyme. The opening spread places one purple square opposite a die-cut that frames two yellow circles. Turning the page reveals a polka-dotted clown's shoe, with the purple square becoming the buckle ("Buckle my shoe"). Later, five diamonds and six stars become part of circus elephants' colorful blankets, and gatefold flaps close out the book, showcasing a singing, ice skating "good fat hen." Watching abstract images turn into concrete shapes should please toddlers, and the inclusion of the words and numerals for each number cements the concept. Up to age 3. (Jan.)
Children's Literature - Heidi Hauser Green
Judging by the title, you may think you know this nursery rhyme. You would be wrong. Here, an old classic is reborn with a circus theme, shown in brightly-colored, pleasingly animal-centric pictures. The title page sets the scene, showing a mouse buckling the shoe of a circus elephant. The "One" page shows a patterned square; the "Two" page features a cut-out square that reveals a pattern on the following page. Turn the page to "Buckle my shoe" and the visuals make sense with the "One" page pattern becoming the buckle of a large shoe; the "Two" page pattern becoming the item's shoe. The mouse, in circus finery, is resting on it. The "Three" page pattern becomes the inner of a door while the "Four" page pattern becomes a window grid for "Knock at the door." The mouse, balanced on a tea cup, barbell and ball, reaches for the doorknob. So it goes. The number pages reveal patterns and the phrase pages provide complete scenes. Our mouse can be found through it all, frolicking with circus elephants, lions, seals, and—finally—"a good fat hen!" Young readers will enjoy delving into these detailed pictures time after time.
