Each volume features a die-cut front cover framing a picture of its ebullient cartoon stars. A zany sensibility gives an extra bounce to the otherwise conventional counting book One, Two, Three! A similar silliness suffuses Dinosaurs , which explores opposites. In Barnyard , farm animals dance a boisterous, breathless, knee-slapping reel called, with great panache, by a fiddle-playing cow: ``Bow to the horse. / Bow to the cow. / Twirl with the pig if you know how.'' The rowdy crew in Monsters bursts in upon a mild-mannered hippo and makes ``the mess that monsters make,'' but returns to make amends. Fresh and buoyant, these books are good, clean fun. Ages 1-4. Amusing as ever, Boynton has created a counting book that shares the joys of friends (hippos, cats, pigs, cows and more) in groups as well as the pleasure of a solitary walk by one. The pictures are funny and the scenes are quite different from those found in the usual counting books. A treat for all.

Sandra Boynton
Cartoonist/author Sandra Boynton infuses her books with a sense of joy, silliness, and -- well, lots of farm animals. With her fun board books, the woman famous for the adults' mantra "Don't Let the Turkeys Get You Down" has become a natural favorite for toddlers.

Biography

In the 1980s, it was hard to enter a gift shop without seeing Sandra Boynton's name. Her humorous pen-and-watercolor cartoons of hippos, ewes, and her famous turkeys (you know, symbolizing the human ones in life who can get you down) were emblazoned on cards, mugs, stickers, stationery...and of course, her wonderful, wacky books, the first of which was 1979's Hippos Go Berserk! .

Boynton began her career as a greeting card illustrator with aspirations of theater directing; but having a family changed her focus, and she began devoting herself full-time to art. Her board books, filled with goofy animal illustrations and rhyming verse, are toddler staples. But their appeal to adults is undeniable, and she has also written a number of humor books for the general public.

Given the rhythmic, buoyant style of her writing, it was only natural that Boynton would become involved in companion music to her books. From the '90s on, several of her titles included accompanying CDs, culminating in the 2002 release of Philadelphia Chickens, a CD-book extravaganza written with composer Michael Ford and featuring musical performances by several high-profile stars.

Who knows what lies ahead for this irrepressible force of nature? If there's one thing Sandra Boynton has proved in the course of her remarkably diverse career, it's that she's not lost her capacity to surprise us. (Thank heavens!)

    One of my favorite Sandra Boynton books

    We own just about every Sandra Boynton and this is definitely on the top of my list (and my 15 month old son's list too). The illustrations are great and my son loves to have it read to him. I would highly recommend this book if you like her work.

    A LOUD LOUD LOUD HIT!

    I bought this book with the expectation that it would be one of those books I pick ever so often to familiarize my one year old with the concept of numbers and counting. Little did I know what an unbelievable hit it would be. We read it everyday. My daughter loves it, one year after and many more books added to the library she stills selects LOUD! LOUD! LOUD! for bedtime.
