Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Katsh
Infant twins, as different as night and day, arrive at the home of a newly "big" sister. How their arrival changes the life of the family is warmly and humorously told in One Up, One Down. It's written from the sister's point of view and it is her truthful tone that refreshes the well-covered new baby theme. Parents of twins will welcome this addition to their library.
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-Katie is helpful throughout the first year of her twin brothers' lives-feeding them, propping them up, helping them to walk, or dealing with their messes. As they grow, she wonders if she, too, is getting bigger. Katie is unresentfully (and perhaps unrealistically) on the side of the big folks-the title is what the family says as they cheerfully note whenever one boy is squared away and the other one needs attention. When the twins get their first pair of shoes, Katie discovers that her feet have grown and she'll need new shoes, too. So now she ``feels like a big sister.'' This gentle story will ring true not only with young children who long for proof that they are growing but also with anyone who is helping to raise a baby. Watercolor and black-line cartoon figures stand out against the white spaces, and occasional montages of photolike pictures provide interest when set alongside the single-page illustrations. Katie's creative clothing choices and Chambliss's renderings of the baby squabbles add humor as well. In this happy and generous family, sibling rivalry doesn't have a chance!-Susan Hepler, Alexandria City Public Schools, VA

A small child helps her parents take care of her twin baby brothers from the time they are born and as they begin to walk and talk. Chirpy line-and-watercolor cartoon illustrations express the affection of the family and the farce of the domestic scene. Occasional small, framed pictures are like calm snapshots; in contrast are the hectic scenes of mess and exhaustion ("We all wore drips of cereal and fruit" ). There's also the excitement when the twins learn to walk and to say their first words. Older siblings will enjoy the story of a child who knows that despite the demands of the babies, she's needed and loved. Above all, she's bigger.
