Overview

This compilation from the New Earth label is meant to show just how wonderful some of its albums are. That's a great idea -- the shame is that it ends up emphasizing the overall weaknesses of many of the tracks involved. Some are excellent, like the two remixes off Kali Thunder; Joshua Prem's "Lahore Connection Radio Mix," with some thundering bass and beats; and James Asher's surprisingly delicate "Gold," which intersperses Bach into its melodies for music that shimmers. Unfortunately, it's downhill from there. The idea of a One World Party is that the world is that of the musicians, which means authenticity isn't necessarily part of the deal; the tracks from Asher's Feet in the Soil 2 seem only tangentially involved with Africa, with it's lush, full sound and melodies. "Bedouin Wedding" cuts closest to the bone, but the main problem is that the track never goes anywhere. Too much of the material here takes the soft option of big chords and pillowed melodies, letting style win out over substance. Cybertribe has an interesting idea on "Back to this Land," one with strong possibilities, but they're never explored, sadly. This is music that could really say something if the people involved put in a bit more thought and effort.
