Overview

The aim of this book is to introduce readers to the world of online poker. Having explained the issues involved in choosing a poker site, it describes the mechanics of poker room software.

Regarding the various poker games, it concentrates on the most popular one - Texas Hold'em. It provides an in-depth analysis of all aspects of the Fixed Limit and No Limit versions of the game, and a basic strategy for beginners, followed by advanced techniques and stratagems.

In less detail (but sufficient to get the player off to a good start), it also covers the games of Omaha and Seven card stud, explaining how the games are played, plus basic strategies.

The subject of online tournaments (also very popular) is covered in detail, and in the final chapter there are many tips for the player wishing to improve his game.

Stuart Yarnold is an electronics engineer who has been working in the industry since leaving college. Originally a marine radio & radar troubleshooter, he now devotes much of his time to playing poker professionally and can usually be found lurking in one of the online poker rooms.

Stuart lives near Cambridge with his wife Pauline and his two Staffordshire bull terriers - Jim and George. His hobbies include woodworking and marathon running

    BUY IT

This book was recommended to me for the chapter on Tournament play. Since then I've gone from holding my own to showing a consistent profit.

    The Nuts

As an avid poker player who's always seeking to improve his game, I buy all the poker books as they are come out (I have dozens of them). Some are good, some are average and some are terrible. This one I rate very highly. The author bills it as an introduction to online poker but I found it to be much more than that. The first two chapters are a general discussion of internet poker sites and the software and is basic stuff - to be fair I suppose this is necessary in an introduction to the subject. The good stuff begins with chapter 3 where the author describes the factors necessary to choose a good table at which to play. Chapter 4 - Poker Ploys - is really excellent and explains concepts such as free cards, check raising, bluffing, etc. Particularly good is the section on playing the percentages. This explains pot odds and implied odds and how they can be used to establish whether or not a hand is worth playing. This alone justifies the price. Following chapters take you through Texas Holdem (fixed and no-limit) and Omaha in depth with the aid of sample hands. The strategies described are on the conservative side for an experienced player but for someone who's not, is just what is needed. The chapter on tournament play is also very good and the author describes a general strategy that in my experience is just about spot-on. A nice aspect of the book is that it includes some interesting poker related topics as well, e.g. a description of pokerbots (automated poker software for those who don't know). This makes it an enjoyable and informative read as well, unlike most poker books, which tend to be on the dry side.
