Overview

With its stunning melodies, ringing guitars, and razor-sharp grooves, Only By The Night delivers on the promise Kings of Leon have shown throughout their career. From the desolate atmospherics of the opening track "Closer" (which Caleb says is about a lovesick vampire) to the emotional intensity of the closing ballad "Cold Desert" ("about a man at the end of his rope who picks himself back up"), Only By The Night is all heart from start to finish.
Album highlights include the insistently chugging first single "Sex on Fire" ("there's always been an element of sex in our music, so I thought I'd just wrap it all up in one song and be done with the sex for the rest of the record," Caleb jokes), the throbbing, propulsive "Crawl" (about relationships of all kinds and taking them for granted), and the sonically sweeping "Use Somebody," which Caleb wrote while feeling lonely on the road. "It's about being far from home." Then there's the soaring uplift of "Manhattan," which is partly about dancing and enjoying life and partly about the struggles of Native Americans. "'Manhattan' is actually a Native American word that means 'island of many hills,'" says Caleb, who adds that his family has Native American blood. Finally there's the driving, forceful "Notion," which finds the singer pushing back against anyone who says anything against anyone in his band.
Overall, the Followills knew it was time to be honest about their ambitions and prove what they could really do. Caleb, for one, unleashes some of the most righteous, anguished singing he's ever recorded. "I knew it was a risk for me to go in there and really open up and belt the way that I know that I can; the way that I used to when I was younger," he says. "I just hid my singing for so long because I was nervous that people would listen to my lyrics, assume I wasn't intelligent because I'm from Tennessee, and pick me apart, so that's why I sang the way I did. But going into this, I knew these melodies that we were playing were too beautiful for me to fuck it up. I had to go for it."

This is one of the best albums I've heard in a long time. Every song is so good I can't pick a favorite. Their sound is so original and his voice is very unique. I highly recommend this CD!

Kings of Leon have been one of the most underappreciated bands in the US. They are reknown across the globe accept for here. It's a shame too, their growth on &quot Only by the Night&quot shows their talent coming together after 3 amazing albums. Every CD gets better and more mature. The first 5 tracks are top notch, with &quot Sex on Fire&quot and &quot Use Somebody&quot standing out the most. While they might not have the &quot oomph&quot of their first 2 &quot in your face&quot CDs they do carry more of the &quot chilled style&quot of the 3rd one and they combine the best of them all. Caleb Followhill is probably on the most underated singers as well. His voice has gotten more crisp and believe it or not, more personal. This CD will not dissapoint. It make take more than 1 spin to grown on you but believe me it will grow on you.

If you've been listening to KoL for a while, you won't be disappointed with this album. Songs: Be Somebody, Use Somebody, Closer, Sex on Fire, and more are awesome.

I've owned this record for several weeks and I do not get tired of it. These young cats have developed an innovative, signature sound that is complex and melodic. Included in the equation are Caleb's evocative vocals, with the rasp and that sweet cry, some vague and scimpy lyrics notwithstanding. The magic has matured and solidified on this album. In a world who's commercial pop music makes the ears bleed and sucks the life out of you, this band is one of those that restores my faith in the wealth of imagination and musical genious waiting to rock us through the generations.

one of the best CDs ever -- lots of soul. There is nothing out there to compare it to, amazing lyrics, composition and great depth. They've come a long, long way. I love this CD.

My daughter gave me this cd. It's one of the best I've heard in a very long time. I'm not quite 60 and this has made me excited about music again about a group I had not yet heard of.

I bought this cd sight unseen (or audio unheard!) because I thought KOL sang the song "Use Somebody" which I had heard on the radio and loved. I took it home and loved every song on it. I have since gone back and bought all of their earlier albums. They definitely have a "sound" as the lead singer's voice is very distinctive, but it doesn't all sound the same. I would highly recommend this cd and all their earlier ones. Best song...hard to choose, but I really like the song "17" which might not make single status, but is great. Like three songs in one. My teenaged daughter thinks they are the coolest, and so do I! I do wish they would have put the song lyrics inside the cover--I want to sing along!

Kings of Leon is by far one of my favorite bands. All of their cds have been amazing. With this cd, I felt that this was their best record yet. I highly recommend it to everyone. With the musky-rustic-raspy voice of the lead singer it becomes a unique sultry and seductive cd.!
