Overview

From the bestselling author of "Wedding for a Knight" comes another sensual tale of romance in medieval Scotland—the story of two star-crossed lovers who must resist the love that burns in their hearts and the desire that consumes their souls. Original.

Editorial Reviews

"The perfect Scottish historical adventure. Romance, misty locales, star-crossed love, non-stop action, and an amazing ending. Characters are well-drawn, full of spirit and highly sympathetic. Previous readers of Welfonder's work, you'll find a few of your old favorites scattered throughout the story. And new readers are in for a real treat--a sweet romance with quite a bit of sizzle and more than enough mystery. Good work, Ms. Welfonder--please, please keep them coming!"

"ONLY FOR A KNIGHT gives Welfonder's readers an opportunity to revisit well-loved characters from earlier books. Robbie is the hero's little boy from DEVIL IN A KILT. The various conflicts kept me glued to the pages through the entire book and then none of them turned out the way I would have expected. All of the characters are larger than life and just as wonderful to read about this time around, as they were in previous books. I was fascinated with Juliana's brother, Kenneth. It'd be wonderful to read about his story in the future."
Romance Junkies
Lynne Welch
"A lusty, rollicking medieval Scottish romance. Fans of Welfonder's previous tales will remember young Robbie and rejoice in revisiting favorite haunts and characters; new readers are in for a treat as they encounter the award-winning author's well-researched, vividly re-created vision of Scotland's glorious past."
Booklist
Marilyn
"Sensually ROMANTIC. Robbie embodies the stuff a dream lover is made of! A refreshing heroine. Along with the enticing imagery of the mood and magic of the Highlands the author is brilliant at invoking, the reader is sure to become a devoted fan!"
Historical Romance Writers Review
Suzanne Tucker
"Captivating Scottish romance ... will win your heart. A fast-moving adventure. Steamy, sensual and utterly breathtaking ... you'll treasure this one."
Fresh Fiction

"Readers will sympathize with Robbie and the tough spot he's in. He tries to strike a balance between pleasing his father and both clans to a certain extent but cannot yield on his decision to have Julianna for his bride. Julianna's arrival to the castle unburies secrets from the past and allows Robbie's father to confront his hadows and finds a powerful healing in forgivness. Welfonder dusts her plot with a little bit of the paranormal and as usual gives her many fans another memorable historical read."

"The long-awaited story of Robbie ... a book I highly recommend for those who enjoy sexy Scotsmen. A wonderful tale of love."

Chapter One

IN THE MIST-SHROUDED FASTNESSES of Kintail, a rugged country of sea lochs, wild heather hills, and moorlands on the western coast of Scotland, one man has e'er held sway. Since time beyond mind some might say, Duncan MacKenzie, the famed Black Stag of Kintail, has called this hauntingly beautiful place his own.

His, and the great house of MacKenzie, the most powerful clan in the region.

Truth be told, those who visit Kintail cannot help but be awed by the grandeur and magic of the land, or the tall tales circulated about its legendary chieftain. A deceptive air of tranquility and timelessness clings to the dark peaks and shadowed glens, a peace made possible only by the puissant Black Stag's competent rule-and his formidable reputation.

Few are those who would cross him.

And most who have tried are no more.

Yet, of late, during long Highland nights beside the fire, the more bold amongst the tongue-waggers declare that the Black Stag has grown complacent and would surrender his lairdship to his only son and heir, Robbie MacKenzie. A braw young man whose task would seem tame, inheriting a land so favored, its people already loyal and true.

But all is not as it seems in the soft Highland air and broad, cloud-hung hills of Kintail, its purple moors and empty glens.

For deep within the most remote corner of this expanse of hill and sea, change and disruption stir like an ancient benediction chanted just beneath the surface to echo across the heather until even one so mighty as the Black Stag cannot deny its truth.

Or run from the burdens and memories of the past.

Robbie, too, must trod the path of fate.

A path indelibly inscribed on his destiny and unleashed by the whispered last wishes of a frail and dying woman.

    fine medieval romance

In 1344 after staying away from home for ten years to avoid marriage to Lady Ephemia Macleod, Robbie MacKenzie heads home to Kintal because honor demands he weds the woman. At the same time, the mother of Juliana MacKay is dying, but she insists that her daughter pay back the debt they owe Duncan ¿Black Stag¿ MacKenzie. Although Juliana does not believe Duncan deserves a cent, she gives a death bed vow to do so. Robbie rescues Julian from drowning in a loch. She does not remember who she is and why she is traveling. He assumes she is a peasant due to her rough hands, but a thief too because she carries a cache of coins. As they journey together, they fall in love. However, at Kintal, as Juliana regains her memory, besides honor, Robbie learns that even if Duncan willingly risked the wrath of the Macleods, he explains to his son he cannot marry his beloved because they are first cousins. --- Sue-Ellen Welfonder¿s latest medieval romance is a terrific tale starring a star-crossed couple whose love for one another seems helpless because of alliances and blood. The story line is filled with a feel for the era, but is driven by the cast including the return of the Mackenzie clan. Although the rival fiancée is too nasty to matter even if the affronts by her future spouse and her future mother-in-law are blatant, fans will take delight with this fine tale that clears up many of the threads from previous novels.--- Harriet Klausner

Fall in Love with Medieval Scotland

Ms. Welfonder weaves a story of two unsuspecting people on separate missions falling in love and enduring adversity to marry. This story is beautifully drawn. From the moment they meet, Robbie and Julianna set sparks to the book pages. Here is a romance to be enjoyed in one setting. A true keeper!
