Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

The global marketing juggernaut that is the Paul Frank Industries character Julius-he's the pop-retro monkey character with the bright red mouth found on countless T-shirts and accessories-now makes his move into the children's book department. Julius's personality has no emotional texture or traction to offer-beyond irony, that is-and his narration is appropriately literal and blandly uplifting: "Flying is just one thing I can do in my dreams," he says as he flaps his arms and sails over a playground. "Anything is possible!" Nascent and aging hipsters may find all this way cool, and the inexhaustible cheeriness of the digital, candy-colored images is undeniably impressive. But this is little more than a brand extension, filled with supporting characters that resemble refugees from an anime-inspired cartoon. Ages 2-5. (May)

PreS-Gr 2- Bedtime is a surreal adventure for Julius, a monkey. In his dreams, "anything is possible." He can sport an elephant trunk or a potato body, visit a castle in the clouds or a frosted-cupcake village, or become a rock star in outer space. The text is a series of credulous exclamations: "WOW! I'm flying!" "Now I'm a GIANT BEAST set loose on an unsuspecting metropolis!" The digitally rendered illustrations are bright and bold. Julius's animal friends populate detailed scenes aboard pirate ships and in underground caverns. After a night of endless possibilities, Julius appears disappointed when he wakes up in the morning and leaves his dream world. The busy cartoons seem ill-matched for a good-night story and, like the text, tend to fall flat.-Linda Ludke, London Public Library, Ontario, Canada

    great bedtime story!

I borrowed this book from the library, read it to my daughter and she just loved it. So I bought it and now we read the book every night for bedtime. She is almost 3 yrs old and reads the book. We usually take turns reading to each other. The words in the book are easy to read and pick up or even memorize. She knows what each picture means and how it associated with the words. I would recommend this book to others for an easy to read quick bedtime story.
