Only [Bonus Tracks]by Tommy Emmanuel
The Australian guitar legend's early-'90s albums on EMI and Sony were worldwide hits, but his first real splash onto the American smooth jazz charts was 1997's Midnight Drive on Higher Octave (released internationally as Can't Get Enough). It was one of the year's more popular discs, but rather than follow up with something similar, he continued on with the musically eclectic journey that has always marked his career, doing a Grammy-nominated fingerpicking album with mentor Chet Atkins. While those who only know him through his one smooth hit may be disappointed with the austere simplicity of this first-ever solo guitar project, fans of good picking and straight-from-the-heart sentiment will rejoice. His acoustic style is so rustic that listeners even "hear the wood," so to speak, almost as harmony accents to his melodies. The untrained ear might think there's too much sameness from track to track, but closer listens reveal some interesting mood swings -- from the dark and hauntingly romantic "Those Who Wait" and "Questions" to more upbeat, folky ramblers like "Timberlake Road" and the truly locomotive "Train to Dusseldorf." [An expanded version of Only was released with five bonus tracks.]

Tommy Emmanuel takes his guitar and produces the best steel string guitar music out there. Brilliant melodiuos and all around GREAT music from Tommy Emmanuel C.G.P. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THIS ALBUM! Most of the music isnt stuff you would tap your feet to but its the stuff you close your eyes and let the music flow. GET THISSSSSSSSS
I have been a huge fan of Tommy's for years, but this has to be the best so far. My personal favorite song is "Questions." I have just one request tho --- When some of you come to see Tommy in concert, please refrain from humming along with his playing. It drives my bonkers!!! But, I know exactly why people do it --- he is wonderful. Makes you feel so much better for knowing him!! Can't wait til the next one!!
the best emanuel has ever done. This is the purest, coolest mix of guitar music. Showcases his emense talent, without any distraction of other instruments, only Emanuel at his best.
Tommy's mastery of the guitar as a multi-faceted instrument for creating musical sound goes way beyond picking and strumming the strings...he mesmerizes you with incredibly controlled softness countered by thunderously flashy change-ups and light-fast fingerpicking--an instant journey through the traditions of Chet Atkins, on to folk, jazz & fusion styles...making one think of Al de Meola or John McLaughlin. Emmanuel offers original compositions of impossible manipulations of string sound, drumming rhythms, harmonics, and unusual voicings from every part of the instrument including the face, body, rims, neck, nuts, and bridgeworks. Have you ever heard a guitar capture the subtle sounds of the wind? Or of an aboriginal diggerydoo?? This album forced me to go hear him live in concert!
