More About This Book

Overview

ONLY VETERANS is a novel that focuses intimately on the brief relationship between two adolescent boys. Moral issues - honesty, loyalty, death - play a vital role in this novel, as two boys, one from the city, the other from the country, come together accidentally to share an experience that will transcend almost twenty years. Set in the farm country of New Jersey, in the early summer of 1956, ONLY VETERANS is aptly titled, for in this story, not far removed from the end of World War II and Korea, there are three "veterans" of different battles: Chips, the son of a father who never returned from World War II and who now cares for his grandmother and his catatonic mother; Joey, son of a murdered criminal father trying to deal with the immorality of his own mother; and Carla, a slightly older girl left alone after the death of all the adults in her life. They are all only children, as well. ONLY VETERANS offers an intimate window into the lives of young people coming of age, and draws upon multiple relationships that take the reader beyond the funny, warm, and amusing dialogue typical between boys. Using crisp, detailed description and dialogue that mirrors reality - two elements that have become keys to his signature style of writing — Ed Buhrer puts the reader in the story.
