This may be the closest I will ever get to the thought processes of a gorilla. Can Neema communicate to those around her to solve a kidnapping?

This is a real page turner, set in Washington state. That was a nice touch. The characters were people I could care about. Finn, the detective, seemed more sensitive than most of them. Let's hope there are more like him out there. I especially liked the gorillas, and I thought they were described to a "T." How the "witness" told what she saw made me root for the gorillas. It was fun reading what she said and trying to figure out what she meant, like the business with the coiled snake. I thought the way the teen moms acted, the Sluts, they called themselves, read spot-on. The build-up of the story line teased me all the way to the end. I couldn't stop reading. I took the book to bed with me, but kept falling asleep and dreaming, then waking up. I had to sort this story out from what I was dreaming three different times. So I got up at five a.m. to finish it. I expect I'll read this book again. From a guy who doesn't read mysteries.

Great for book clubs. A lot of thought provoking topics for group discussions: - Creationism/Darwinism taught in schools; - Balance between protecting an individual's privacy and catching the bad guy thru subpoena of records. - Human trafficking / stealing and selling babies. - Private property vs public safety: gorillas as neighbors.

THE ONLY WITNESS is one of those rare books I did not want to put down. The plot is highly imaginative. The characters are sketched with enough details that I cared about them, even the two gorillas--especially the gorillas. And I cared deeply for the teen mother, whose baby was stolen. This story has a big heart. The writing flows along and the sentences have what I'd call musicality. Also, some books are padded with extraneous description to wade through, but not this one. Who wants to get bogged down in unnecessary words when you've stolen time in the middle of the night to read a book? Subtle clues lead you to an ending that is surprising yet satisfying. And, just when you think you¿ll find time to do the dishes, you discover that the author has gifted you with the first two chapters of another of her novels, SHAKEN, so now I'm hooked on that one. This woman can write.
