Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
As the second largest country in the world, Canada has a picturesque landscape and an abundance of diverse cultures. This "Exploring Canada" series focuses on Ontario, the province whose population makes up one-third of Canada's total population. It is a place where one-sixth of its territory consists of lakes and rivers. Ontario's first residents, Asians, came from the west. It has also experienced its share of natural disasters, including droughts, earthquakes, tornadoes, ice storms and in 1954 Hurricane Hazel hit causing about $2 million in damages and approximately one hundred deaths. The abundance of a wide variety of plant life helps keep wildlife in Ontario diverse, including elk, bobcats, mountain lions, bears and wolves. A major city, Toronto is Ontario's capital and known as Canada's financial and administrative capital. Ontario is also home to one of the largest public transportation systems in North America. Outdoor hobbies and leisure often involve ice-skating, Niagara Falls, fishing and water sports. The book has a detailed chronology, bibliography and index, providing a great introduction to the provinces and territories of Canada. 2003, Lucent Books/The Gale Group, Ages 12 to 15.

Gr 4-8-A well-researched look at the past and present of Canada's most populous province. Ferry gives ample attention to Ontario's history, geography, links to the United States, current political and social issues, and cultural diversity. The well-organized text has a time line of major events in both Canadian and Ontario history and anecdotes that support the text. Despite the quality of the information, the presentation is somewhat lackluster. The textbook look and black-and-white photographs do little to stir readers' interest. While more current than Kathryn MacKay's Ontario (Children's, 1992; o.p.) and Suzanne LeVert's Ontario (Chelsea, 1991; o.p.), those titles are livelier reads and more attractive. Students may find Ferry's volume useful for reports but they are unlikely to pick it up for general interest reading.-Robyn Walker, Elgin Court Public School, St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
