In 1958 White wrote the first of a series of fourteen garden pieces that appeared in the magazine over the next twelve years. Katharine S. White (1896-1977) was fiction editor at The New Yorker from 1925 to 1959. She and her husband, E. B. White, lived in New York City and North Brooklin, Maine.
